2 Yr Old Getting Naked and Jumping Out of the Crib!

I need help! Our 2 1/2 year old (and yes, maybe he is a little old for the crib) is jumping out, collecting his two older brothers, and coming downstairs at least 4 times every night after bedtime. Oh, and yes he does take off his PJ's and diaper before he comes downstairs. Our older two never really did either, and by the night time comes around, I am exhausted! So my problem is two fold: The getting naked, and the coming downstairs after bedtime. Any ideas?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for your help with my naked 2 year old escape artist. Putting on PJ's backwards with the feet cut off was sheer genius. I ended up installing a door knob with the lock from the outside. I only use this as a deterrant, and I have never kept him locked in his room longer than an hour. It's the only thing that works, because he can jump gates and rip off childproof door knobs. I am planning on installing a tall gate today to see if this works instead. Thanks everyone!!-N.

I have a friend that had to do those things and safety pin the pj's (that were on backwards) and the crib tent zipper pull... She even ended up having to retrofit the tent with a heavier mesh as the kind it comes with in the baby section was not strong enough.
Good luck!

hello,
As far as him taking his clothes off my son did the same thing when he was younger. What we did was cut the feet off the footsie pj's and put them on backwards so the zipper was in the back. That stopped him from being able to get undressed...
Good Luck

Hi N.! I had the same problem with both of my boys as they are both very agile climbers.(can be a good or bad thing!) The only way I survived was to go to babies r us and buy a crib tent. It is the best invention ever! (a little pricey but so worth it) My boys resisted for a few nights but we tried to make it fun like a camping tent. They got used to it very soon and were both in it until they were 3. I felt safe knowing they weren't running around all hours of the night. As for the naked thing try putting one piece pj's on, sometimes they are harder to get off. Good luck! Motherhood can be crazy sometimes! M. from Windsor,CT

I think your story is cute, yet I can understand your frustrations. First off, the person who said, cut off the feet of the jammies and put them on backwards was a excellent idea!!!!! As for the getting out of bed....... He is 2 1/2, and buying a crib tent at this stage would be quite a investment. My son went in a bed at 2yr 4mo old. Why not switch him to a bed? Make it a big deal, and get him a character bedding set, perhaps he might just want to stay put? I dont know how your house is set up, maybe a gate on his door? but from what you described, maybe he'd climb over that? Can you close his bedroom door, does he know how to open that? At least til he is asleep. Best of luck , please put in a update, I love to hear what people did and how they made out.

Does he have a tv or radio in his room? Sometimes white niose keeps a child from waking up to other nioses, e.g. street noises and they sleep through the night. It also helps them to sleep better when they are older. Grandmother of several.

The only advice I can give is to not stimulate him before bed sit with him and his brothers and have story time. That is the only thing that would work with my girls. I also stopped giving snack and a drink to close to bed time.

I had to get rid of my daughter's crib after she jumped out several times. People yelled at me but her safety was my concern. She did take off her clothes at times and still comes downstairs to get water or will not go to bed.My daughter is a teen. I believe that you have a "spirited child!" It is not a bad thing just a lively and energetic child. If he can get rid of that energy in the day it may help. Good Luck. G.
