My 2 year old has recently discovered that if she puts things up her nose they disappear! cool trick to a 2 year old but i have heard horror stories of kids having to go to the ER for this. she has stuck food, like rice, cereal, bread. and of course her favorite... paper. today she sneezed and a huge wad of paper came out that i didnt even know was in there. this scared me to death that she will get something stuck in her sinus cavity... has anyone else gone through this and how long did it last?? what can we do to stop it?

What can I do next?

My two-year-old has put corn and vitamins in his nose. Luckily I had already heard what the doctor does with chilren who have things stuck in their noses. I blew air pretty hard into one nostril, and the corn came flying out the other nostril. The vitamin was a little more difficult, but I was able to blow it out enough to be able to work the rest out with my fingers.

Hopefully your daughter will lose interest in this activity soon. Toddlers just seem to enjoy exploring everything. :)

my son went through that around 18 months. we would find playdough bits in his nose and ears if we glanced away while he was playing. Its a fascination and learning about the world. "hey this is bigger/smaller, that fits here..." to discourage it we told him "not for ears/nose" instead of no. if he wasn't listening we removed what he had. it wasn't to long before he realized he would lose what he had if it went into somewhere it wasn't sopposed to be. make a stern point with her and let her know why it shouldn't go somewhere particular. she will get it.

Haha! The only reason I can laugh sweetie is because when I was in first grade I stuck an appleseed in my ear. And I almost think I can remember thinking it would be cool just to see if it fit in there, and guess what? It did! Unfortunately my folks had to take me to the ER to have it extracted. After that my mom called me "Appleseed A." for years and it drove me nuts! I was like, what, 6? I honestly don't know what you can do to stop it- 2 year olds are crazy little folks! Hrm.... sorry if I'm not any help, I just thought maybe you could at least get a laugh out of my story. I'm sure it's just a phase, but maybe your pediatrician has a nurse that can offer some suggestions, good luck!

I totally didn't read the responses below before I responded, but it sounds like the lady with the salt water squirt has the right idea!

Next time she puts something up her nose take her to your pediatrician. My son stuck a gummy bear up his nose. The nurse had to spray water into his nose with a water pick kind of machine to get it out. He never stuck anything else in his nose again because he did not want to go through that again.

My son when he was 20 mo old put a bead from a key chain up his nose to which we had to go to er and if the surgeron could get it out they was going to put him to sleep and get it out... Which they got it out without surgery... He is now 11 and it took up til he was 3 1/2 for him to stop put things around his nose and mouth...

My youngest son did this too, only it was his ears. Every doctor appointment, the doctor would find something in his ear - a bead, a crayon, etc. About the third or fourth time of this, there was something blue in his ear. It was so far in that the doctor could not get it out. He sent us to an ENT who also could not get it out with the vacuum. Finally, they had to schedule "surgery" to get it out. All they did was put him under anesthesia, and went in with the tweezers and the vacuum and got it out. That experience seemed to break him of the habit.

My son is driving me crazy!!! My 21 month old keeps sticking stuff in his ears! 2 days ago my son stuck a seed from a tree in his ear and I had to take him to the ER to have it removed. I was hoping the traumatic experience would be memorable, but I guess not... Last night I came home to find out that he was sticking gold fish in his ears and nose!!! I guess we'll just be keeping a close watch on him for a while.

Hi E.,

The local hospital knew my Lydia by name because we were in the ER so much. She put everything in everywhere!

I did discover later on that her desire to do things like this was connected to what had been diagnosed as ADHD. Her behavior was stemming from an overabundance of environmental toxins from my cleaning supplies as well as the pesticides and preservatives in the foods that she ate. Once I detoxed her little body and detoxed our home, her behavior changed dramatically and her ADHD diagnosis was completely removed.

If you hadn't considered that, feel free to get back to me for more information. It was really simple once I understood the basic concept and the detoxing was actually very inexpensive. Our family is much heathier now because of it!

Hope I can be of help.

Regards,

M.
