2 Year Old Holds Urine for a Long Time

My 2 and half hold at some point of the day holds her urine for 12 or in some cases up to 18 hours (one time 22 hours). Let say she urinates normally some point in the morning 8 or 9 and a few times after that and then goes at 3 or 4pm until the next day. We have not started potty training, she is still on diapers. She drinks a decent amount of water during the day and still breastfeeds during the night. We have taken her to the urologist and they did a renal sonogram and CMP (kidney function) and thank god everything resulted normal. The urologist told me keep her on observation and that he will see her again in 3 months. Just wondering if another mother has experience something similar, should I take her to a nephrologist I am worried that her kidneys suffer in the future if she keeps on holding for long periods. Or I am overreacting and this is consider normal?

What can I do next?

I guess my question is why don't you think she's potty trained? If she's dry every morning then she's able to not wear diapers when she's sleeping. If she's dry most of the day let her go without the diaper and see what happens.

Sounds like her body is ready for potty training. When my first was 2, she didn't pee for almost a day. I took her to the doctor who said to wait another day and see if anything changes. I then dropped her off with her nanny, who took off her diaper and set her on the potty. Daughter peed a ton and did not go back to diapers (except for naps/sleeping). She was ready.

She might be blessed with a large bladder.
I'd increase her water/fluid intake.
She might be fine but if she ever gets a UTI, going that long without peeing is going to make it worse.

We hold urine in the bladder. I suggest holding the urine doesn't affect the kidneys. If there is a problem, it could be related to several organs and not just the kidneys. I suggest a urologist is the doctor to see at this point.

if the urologist didn't explain how the urinary system works and the possible causes for this as well as why this doesn't appear to be a problem, I suggest you make an appointment to have this explained.

have you tried encouraging her to urinate by putting her in a tub of warm running water or having her play in water at the sink? These things can trigger the need to pee.

Under what conditions does she not pee for 12 or more hours? When we are feeling stress there are 2 possible reactions. One is to pee often. The other is to not pee at all. Does she feel any negative reactions related to urinating? I'm not sure if stress could cause this. I'm just throwing out an idea.

Second thought. Is she holding urine in the bladder or is her body not making urine? How much liquid is she drinking? How much is a healthy amount? Adults should consume 6-8 glasses. How much for a 2 yo? When does she drink. When you notice she's not urinated for several hours have you tried getting her to drink more at the time you notice it?

Could not urinating over night mean her body is ready to be potty trained?

First, I would start potty training, as she's more than ready. Second, my daughter seemed to have a bladder like a camel, too. Still does at age 12. I swear she pees only about 3 times total on a normal day - morning, once at school, once in the evening. We moms have gotten used to our frequency and forget that children do not have to urinate as often as we do.

My 6 yr old pees about 3 times a day, including wake up time. And he drinks all day long. He must have a bladder the size of Toledo. And when he pees, it's a good 5 minute long pee. But that's just been his normal!
He's perfectly healthy. Just never pees!

If she doesn't seem sick/hurt/troubled by it, leave her be.
