2 Month Old with Terrible Gas Pains

My two month old started having terrible gas pains last week. A little history - he was born 5 weeks early and was in the NICU for 2 1/2 weeks learning to eat. Due to this, he didn't take too well to breastfeeding. Wanting my little guy to get the best start, I decided to bottle feed him breast milk for as long as I could. He currently gets both formula and breastmilk. I am weening him off breastmilk as I plan to go back to work July 1. He has always grunted and growned alot but last week started turning bright red, kicking his legs uncontrollably and crying like he is in severe pain. HIs little tummy is so tight either from flexing his muscles or from the gas. Please help with any suggestions you have; it is killing me to see him in such pain.

hello my little boy never got to bad but the advice that was given to me was to lay him on his back and gently put his feet to his head a few times about 1/2 min. and try apple or prun juice very deluted (not more than an ounce). That was what my dr. had told me when my son was little. I hope all the best for you both. Let me know, if you want.

my daughter just turned 1 month old today. She alternated formula and breastfeeding just fine. I started giving her Babies magic tea for gassy and fussy babies. She loves it and it keeps her from being gassy and spitting up. I used the same tea for my first child.

Try switching to a soy based formula, he is probably lactose intolerant.

J., I am sorry you are going through that! Have you tried the "Little Tummy's" medicine? Or the Simylicon (sp?) gas relief drops? Those really helped my girls. Also, have you considered trying a different formula or different bottles? My youngest was really gassy as a baby and we switched to Enfamil Gentle Ease, it really made a difference. Also, you might try to burp him after every couple of ounces. And, about an hour or so after he finishes a bottle, you can lie him on his back and gently roll his legs like he's riding a bike...it helps to push out any gas. Hope some of this helps you...Good Luck!

oh my googness you are me! my 2nd daughter was also born 5wks prem. and in the nicu for a week and never had a strong enough suck to breast feed. also i had a 1yr old daughter at the time she was born so didn't have enough time to eat drink and pump like i wanted. try this, the best mainstream formula you can buy is the carnation or nestlee good start with dha and ara because it really does break down better in their tummys. also if that doesn't work then you may have to buy organic or that special formula alenteniam or something like that your pedi will know. also your baby could have reflux but i would try those other formulas first before putting him on medication. also when he's older and starts food he could have some of those same problems. always mix the rice cereal in it with his formula and just add a little of food with it,i started with veggies and went throug all of them except broccoli and spinach cause i was worried it would be too h*** o* her stomach, then went to fruits. also to save some money you don't have to buy the baby applesauce buy the organic no sugar added motts applesause it tastes so good and is actually better than the baby food and you get more for your money! well God bless and hope he does better! Hi J.! I don't know if your baby is too young or too small, but have you asked your doctor if you can give him Mylicon yet? I have a little 6 month old nephew who's had trouble with gas similar to what you've described since he was very young and my sister-in-law gives him Mylicon all the time. You might also ask your pediatrician if you can switch formulas. My daughter, who's 6 now, had gas and reflux problems when she was an infant and we had to try almost every formula out there until Enfamil came out with a new one that seemed to help her problem. I'm sorry your little guy is having a hard time. I wish him good health and you good luck in finding something that helps!!

J.,

I'm so sorry you having to go this! I well remember those days with my daughter... they weren't that long ago.

I received lots of help from friends and on this site. My question from her second round with gas (with responses) can be found here: http://www.mamasource.com/gb/request_details.do?reqid=D07...

The moms were so helpful, I hope you find some answers in their responses.

When my daughter was about 5 weeks old, she was having the same issues (and given that she was born 2.5 weeks early, that might put her at about the same "real age" as your little guy is now at 2mo). She started on a combo of breastmilk and formula, but was just about all formula when the gas problems started. We had to try several formulas (including soy) until we finally found Nutramigen (by Enfamil). It was suggested by a friend and my pediatrician and, although it's much more expensive, it was well worth it. It didn't make the gas go away entirely, but she was like a whole new baby. Something I didn't know then and only recently found out is that some insurance plans will cover the cost of Nutramigen if the doctor calls them to say it is necessary. I wish I had known that as it is over twice the price of all other formulas.

We also burped regularly during the feedings, about every 1-2 ounces. Keeping her vertical seemed to help with pain and with ability to burp. When he's having the severe pain that you describe, try pumping his legs in a bicycle fashion if he is lying down or try holding him as verticle as you can and bounce him - on the edge of a bed or a large exercise ball while patting his back. The bouncing makes them feel better and helps the gas to pass either up or down (whichever place it is closest at the time!). Also, gently massaging his tummy in a light, circular motion can help move the gas along too. I tried all three and the bouncing seemed the most comforting and effective for my daughter, but you just have to find what works best for your little boy.

Congratulations on your baby boy! Just know that this, too, shall pass! (in more ways than one). It's hard to see our little angels going through this, but hang in there!

Please feel free to contact me it you have any questions or just need someone to vent to... I remember what it's like. It does get better.

Hi J.,

My son (who is now 1) also had a difficult time with gas when he was younger. We gave him Mylicon. It's over the counter and it really seemed to help him. We gave it to him with every feed (I think you can give it up to 6 times a day) but you may want to look into it. It really helped my son.

Hi J.,

With anything I would talk to your Pediatrician first. Mine recommended Mylicon drops with every feeding for a while for my daughter. I used the Walmart brand (Equate) and they worked just fine. Hope this helps!

I am so sorry to hear that your baby is having trouble. There is nothing worse than your child being in pain and you're helpless to do anything.

You might consider changing his formula to something easier to digest. we had to put my daughter on Nutramigen. Alimentum is the Similac brand equivalent to Enfamil's Nutramigen so whichever you like. It is a lot more expensive, but well worth it and we were able to change her to a soy based formula after a few months and her digestive system matured a little. It really, really helped.

If he continues to have problems, ask your pediatrician to refer you to a GI specialist as it might be something else.

Good luck and God bless,
A.

I am so sorry, I feel your pain. I went through it along w/acid reflux with my youngest at 7 wks.
Have you tried gas drops and what formula is he on. I used Gentle Ease I believe it's by Enfamil. It worked wonders but then I found Prosobee Lipil by Enfamil and it helped A LOT.
So good luck.

Hi J.,
My youngest daughter had this exact same problem as a baby. "Gripe Water" which can be found in most health food stores and some pharmacies, truly worked for us. It's an all natural gas reliever. Mylicon infant gas reliever drops seemed to work a little too, but she seemed to get the most relief from the Gripe Water. It's just a clear liquid you give them with a medicine dropper. (Funny name, I know!)
Hope this helps! What a scary thing to go through, but you all really will get through it.
God bless!

The the nurse at the hospital, where I had my daughter advised me to take a soft blanket and get it warm in the dryer, then wrap the baby in it. I know that it is hot, but this was an instant cure.
Also, The nurse told me to try taking a warm bath with her and feed her in the bath. She loved it, but beware he may go poop. Hope this info helps. Best of luck!

Ny friend had a baby 6 weeks early and had the same problem w/ gas and constipation. She gives her little one gas drops for infants and put 1/2 ounce of apple juice in each bottle.
I would call your Ped. and tell him/her about the problem also.

Good luck!

the best thing for infants w/colic is slightly warm/almost room temperature chamomile tea (unsweetend). Also changing to baby bottles to the ones w/the colapsable disposable bags. I think they are by Playtex
