2-Year-Old With Grey Teeth?
Hi,
My son is turning two next week and we noticed a couple weeks ago that his teeth are grey. I'm not talking about one or two teeth. It looks like they are ALL pretty grey, but more so on the upper front teeth and closer to the gum-line. We give him a fluoride supplement/multi-vitamin because our water is not fluoridated. We brush his teeth every night. This is the exact same routine we have used with our almost 4-year-old, who has beautiful white teeth. Does anyone know what the cause is? I read that it might be fluoride overdose but we've always given the prescribed dose. We have a doctor's appointment scheduled next month but I'd love some Mama ideas in the meantime. Thanks!

So What Happened?™
It's been a bit of a wait and see, but after taking him off the liquid vitamin that also had fluoride and iron and changing to a chewable, his teeth have slowly whitened! I did have a dentist take a look and she said it just looked like staining. He has yet to allow a dentist in his mouth for a polish, however! Thanks mamas!

Okay, this may sound a little weird but when I had my braces (many many moons ago) I had to use a fluoride rinse. It stained my teeth so yellow that I still have spots that never quite "came out". Later on, it became clear I was pretty sensitive to the stuff. Increased water treatment like in the Spring time when run off is "dirtier" they add more chemicals to the water..including fluoride (where I grew up). I started getting really bad headaches. I still have to be careful of "city water" . If it smells "bleachy"...I have to mix it with juice or gag drinking it and I still have to put up with the digestive end of the allergy..which isn't horribly severe but it is there and its inconvenient if nothing else. I don't drink bottled water for ethical reasons..so..my suggestion is to stop the supplements if you have fluoridated toothpaste and go from there. We only use the Arm and Hammer stuff. (and we buy whichever variety is on sale..but you might want the whitening formula for a bit.

I strongly recommend you start taking him to the dentist. Also check into the water, most are flouridated, even up here in Alaska it is!

J.-This happened to us as well. It was because our son's multi-vitamin had iron in it. We stopped giving it to him but his teeth are still discolored.

My son had to take an antibiotic for a short period of time and i noticed his teeth turned darker. It was temporary and his teeth returned to normal again once he was off the meds.

Has he taken lots of antibiotics? That can definitely have an impact on teeth, both color AND shape.

Take him to a pediatric dentist if you can. My son has one grey tooth, but it happened after he fell off his bike and is actually a "dead tooth." Now would be a good time to start regular dentist visits anyway.

Our pediatrician just talked to us about this last week and it is almost certainly the multivitamin even with immediate brushing. She suggested the flintstones complete vitamins instead. She said the gummy ones don't actually have the vitamins that are beneficial and that they are basically glorified candy.

My two year old and four year old had the same thing. My ped. dentist said to brush their teeth with Baking Soda. It could be fluoride overdose, so if the Baking Soda does not work I would take him to a ped. dentist.
