2-Vessel Umbilical Cord

My good friend is 21 wks. pregnant w/ her 1st child. The fetus was just diagnosed w/ a 2-vessel umbilical cord. Dr. says everything else looks just fine, though she'll have monthly ultrasounds from now on. Does anyone have experience with this? She is looking for a little reassurance.

What can I do next?

Once a month ultrasounds don't sound NEARLY often enough to me. My daughter had a 2 vessel cord and I went to Rush Presbyterian downtown Chicago twice per week for ultrasounds to confirm her movement, heart, growth, etc. She didn't have any other anomalies either, such as lesions or cysts. The 2 vessel cord is a marker for Trisomy 13. I don't mean to be scary but Trisomy 13 is a terrible chromosomal abnormality. Has she done any genetic testing? I ended switching to my care from my OB in Joliet to Rush Presyb. because my Joliet OB told me the two vessel cord was a marker for Downs. Anyway most 2 vessel cord babies do turn out just fine, but there's always a small chance that something is wrong or could go wrong. Maybe the doc's at Rush were a little overprotective but I'd rather do too much than too little. Anyway my daughter is healthy and there weren't any problems. It never bothered her to have a two vessel cord. Your friend's baby will probably be just fine too. But since I was given misinformation by my Joliet OB, I wanted to make sure I told you what I know in case your friend is in a similar situation.

Hello there. I was diagnosed with my fourth child with the same problem and she is a healthy 13 months little girl. Doctor jsut watch the growth very closely. The Heart, liver and the kidneys is what he will watch. The development is another thing he will watch too. As long as all those are going good let her know she will have very little to worry about. Make sure she gets plenty rest so that the baby gets all the oxygen it can get. She can email me if she likes to . Tell her good luck adn hope very thing goes well for her.

I had this with my first child (now a very healthy 4.5 yr old). It was very unsettling at first but we were referred to a specialist who monitored the rest of the pregnancy and it ended up being kind of cool to get more frequent ultrasounds and extra hand holding. The rest of the pregnancy was completely normal, I delivered on time and she was a good weight. Our ped was sure to check that her kidneys were functioning well after birth.

During my 2nd pregnancy, it felt so strange to NOT be monitored as closely -- everything was normal and I only had one U/S the whole pregnancy.

Anyway, best wishes to your friend. I hope the rest of the pregnancy is smooth and that all is well with the baby.

One of my friends in the mom's group I belong to had the same diagnosis. She was also very worried, but she had a beautiful, healthy girl in October.
The doctor will just make sure enough nutrition is getting to the baby by tracking her growth a little more closely, just to be safe.
Please tell your friend not to worry!
