My two and half year old son has probably had 3 solid poops his whole life. His pooh is Always runny. Is this normal? He is allergic to dairy & eggs so he never has those- but has shown no other known food allergies. Does anyone know anything about this?

What can I do next?

Just wondering if you give a lot of apple juice. My daughter was not allergic to apple juice but if she had it - wow!! What messes!! I quickly learned that she could not even have the kids apple juicy juice. Perhaps try some white grape juice instead.

Have you talked to your doctor about it? Make sure you bring it up at your next appointment, or if you're really concerned call and make an appointment now. Just make sure that he is getting enough fluids. If he otherwise seems healthy try giving him foods that are binding that he is not allergic to. Bananas are a good one. I'm not sure which other ones he can have with his allergies.

There is sometimes an issue with wheat/gluten (called Celiac) and it is getting a lot of attention lately. They can do a blood test for a preliminary diagnosis and I would recommend this before going to any more invasive testing. Good luck!

Hi Rene, I had a 4 year old that often had runny poos and I took him to a natural pharmacy. amoungst many other things suggested for his allergies, he suggested Acidophilus. It comes in a powder form in the refrigerated section of a natural pharmacy / natural food store. or you can find it at whole foods. Make sure you get the refrigerated kind and keep it refrigerated! I put a tiny amount (maybe 1/8 tsp) in a spoonfull of apple sauce once a day. It made a huge difference in the consistency of his poops. good luck. W. k

they can run bloodwork to see if he has any absorption deficiencies. we had it done when the baby was one because daycare was always complaining she had runny poop-and the diaper rash was horrible. thank god we had good insurance because when i got the statement from them, it was like $1800 for all the tests. hers all came back normal and she now has perfectly solid poops, but it was good for peace of mind.

My 5 yr old was the same way, I was just able to potty train him within the past few months because of this problem.

After taking him to the doctor and having blood work and stool samples taken, the doctor said there was nothing wrong, but it was still happening. So I talked to a lady from my church and she suggested a multi-vitamin. It is called Isotonix might-a-mins from Market America. It is a powder vitamin that you add to water. My little boy likes it and is now having solid bowel movements regularly. The problems was that he was sick and on alot of antibiotics when he was little and the antibiotics had gotten rid of the good bacteria in the lining of his intestines which caused the diarrea and the multivitamins helped put some of it back in. I hope that this will help. Sorry it is so lengthy.

Have you asked his pediatrician about it? What is he eating/drinking? Apple juice would do it (my pediatrician told me it's the type of sugar, same as in prune juice), switch to white grape juice. Breastmilk would also do it.

I'd start with the B.R.A.T. diet. Bananas. Rice. Applesauce (different sugar than in the juice). Toast. All of these things would bind up loose BMs.

Has your pediatrician had you take stool samples to make sure nothing else bacterial or parasitic is going on? I had to do that last month with my then 5 month old. They also had me give him a half capsule of Culturel in applesauce once a day for a week or two to see if it balanced him out. It didn't. Ours was a reaction to the Rotateq vaccine. It happened the day after his 4 month shots and stopped a week before his 6 month shots. Now he has it again. :(

This is likely related to a lack of digestive enzymes and/or bacterial flora in his digestive system. You need to supplement his diet with a non-dairy probiotic supplement. Do that for 2-3 weeks and see how it goes, it should improve fairly quickly. Because he already has allergies, it's particularly important that he doesn't consume a lot of processed/packaged foods, because otherwise you might soon find there is n increase in the number of food allergies.

Also, please consider NAET, it's a non-invasive technique to eliminate allergies without drugs.

Best of luck.
