Hello fellow parents! I am wanting to take my 2 and 1/2 year old to the snow this year and wondering if I can get recommendations on where to stay, which venue would be the best, and what to pack, besides the obvious snow clothes and some medications, just in case. I can' t decide between big bear vs. mountain high. He's done well on trips to Vegas in the past, so the car ride isn't going to be an issue. Is it better to stay at a cabin or at a nearby hotel? We're not going to put him in any skiing or snowboarding lessons..but want him to play in the snow, and maybe rent one of those small sleds he can have fun in. Any recommendations are definitely appreciated. Thanks for your time, folks! :)

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for taking your precious time to respond back to my questions. I will definitely check out the two links for where to stay and I have already copied and pasted "what to bring" on my computer. Great and helpful feedback, everyone!!

I'm in Buena Park as well, we to Big Bear. I opt for a cabin for the total experience :) Pack regular clothing, jeans, shirts and hoodies to layer and remove as needed.

We go through:

Give them a call with the dates you have in mind and be flexible with them, if needed. Oh, and free sleds :)

Don't know about where to stay and stuff, but if it's baby's first time in the snow, take the camera and capture the joy of his first time in the snow. Have fun!!!!

Last December we took our 3 year old and 6 year old to Mountain High and stayed in a cabin. It was perfect and a lot cheaper than Big Bear. We bought cheap sleds and we were able to do a little sledding right in front of our rental. There is also a sledding area just a little ways down the road, Mountain High area is relatively small, and it was perfect for families. You have to buy a pass to park, but it was not crowded and there were kids of all ages. Buy a good heavy jacket, water repellant pants, and good waterproof gloves, not mittens. A beanie is also perfect for little heads. Bring medication with you Tylenol works for pretty much everything, the prices were outrageous at the little supermarket. Look for cabins on VRBO, they have some really good deals depending on when you want to go. Have fun!

Take extra clothes.
Blankets.
Get a snowsuit for him. The puffy kind. They help a lot.
You can get a little sled to go down a hill WITH him.
Don't make it a long day.
Bring a camera.
Those hand warmers are good.
Bring a thermos of hot cocoa for ourself.

If you're going for the weekend, my thought would be there's more to do in Big Bear. A bigger town to walk around, shop, eat, etc. If your son was older and would spend all of his time outside in the snow, it might be different. But at that age, snow play may not last long. At that age, they get cold quickly, and sometimes they don't like it so much. So be prepared. I remember taking mine (for the day) and they were cold and done after about an hour LOL. You just never know. But other options will make the weekend more fun for you.
