2 1/2 Year Old Daughter Has Too Much Pain in Her Arm.

Her wrist popped out of place several times when she was really little (maybe 4 months) and when she was a little older her elbow would pop out. Well, it still does it and it really hurts her. She won't use it for a few days. I give her tylenol and an ice pack and then it gets better. I have asked the doctor 3 or 4 times about it and they tell me that her bones and joints aren't set and she will grow out of it. Do I get a second opnion, does she need to have it x-rayed, will she just grow out of it, has anyone else had this experience?

What can I do next?

My brother and my son where playing at the age of 3 and my brother grabbed my sons arm and we had thought that it was broken since my son would not move it so i took him to the ER and they did exrays and when they would move his arm to get the different exrays it poped back into place and there was no broken bones and the doctor said that he had seen this before and they do grow out of it he also said that its the ligaments that go over the elbo and if it did stay like that for a while it would cause pain and the ligaments could break. This happened about 5 more times and i would just act like i was the person that was taking the exrays on the kitchen table and it would always pop back into place. My son is almost 9 now and it has not happened again. I hope that helps

Hi L.,

With children we try to work with diet and basic supplements to help their bodies grow properly. I would suggest a childrens liquid calcium, also a liquid mineral supplement, along with childrens probiotics.

I would also suggest a change in her diet. If you would go to this website www.creeksideherbhouse.com on the theory page is suggested what to take out of the diet, and what to put into the diet, and what foods to find the nutrition in.

There is a list of books on the reading page, you can get at any library, or find them on line for more research.

Hope this helps
Blessings

I would definitely go see a specialist. My daughter had nursemaid elbow when she was little and when they reset her elbow they warned us that once this happens the child is more likely to have it re-occur. In our case it has not happened again, but it could just be because it happened to your daughter at such a young age that she is more susceptible to it.

Good Luck,
K.

Go to a pediatric orthopedics doc for a second opinion. Good luck. I know you hate to see her in pain.

My knees do this & I'm an adult. She may grow out of that as she gets older (I HOPE she does, it's EXCRUCIATING!) since her bones/joints hasn't 'set' yet as the doctor put it but for me, it's gotten worse. My right knee really needs replacing but I can't find a surgeon who will do it (I'm not "old enough" they said). The last time it happened to my right knee, it REALLY got torn up & I can't do normal things now like walk, sit or stand for lengthy times or my knee swells up like a balloon! I can no longer run or jump & sometimes my knees hurt so bad I can't hardly stand it. You should probably try to instruct your daughter to make sure she's careful not to do something that may cause it to slip outta place like playing to rough, etc. Maybe that will help. For me, it'll happen regardless if I'm laying in bed, going to sit down, walking down stairs, swimming even standing still then just moving or shifting my body wrong. Just remember, my dr. told me that each time that happens, the bones get "shaved off" & the joint becomes more shallow so I hope your daughter doesn't need surgery to correct this. Best of luck to her & I REALLY hope this issue goes away for her. I'd hate for her to hafta go through what I do as a grownup.

A second opinion is ALWAYS a good idea, but please don't panic. I had a similar problem as a child, and I did grow out of it. No lasting effects - I only remember one incident, when my elbow wouldn't pop back into place, and I had to wear a brace for a few weeks.

Incidentally, if she won't use her arm for a few days, your doctor should teach you how to pop it back in for her. My mom used to do this for me. It will hurt when you do it, but if you can save her a couple of days of pain with one quick pop, it's worth it.

well, my son had toddler's/nursemaids elbow, but I believe that starts at 2.5. He has now outgrown in and has no problem. I would contact Christine Vidouria or a pediatric orthopaedist just to have her evaluated. My thinking is that it may not be nursemaid's elbow because it started so young. Also, Ibuprofen is generally better if there is swelling and your doctor may recommend a higher dose of Advil for a short period of time to just get her over the hump, but yes. Get a second opinion. hang in there.

I would see a child orthopedic dr. They are specialized in this & can probably tell without X-rays. I am not a big fan of x-rays due to the amount of cummulative radiation they emit. In the meantime try using Arnica ointment (B&T makes a good one), they sell it at whole foods or luckyvitamin.com. It is a natural anti-inflammatory, it is great for bruises and pain. I have had some great results with it.

In 1988, my 2 1/2 year old son was resisting going to take
a nap. We actually had a tug of war and his elbow pulled
out of socket. It was very painful. Took him to the
emergency room. The doctor popped it right back into
place and the pain was instantly gone. He called it
nurse maids elbow. Also, after it happens once, it could
more easity happen again. Never did.
Good luck.

I would also recommend looking into something called Ehlers Danlos syndrome. It is a connective tissue disorder and it can cause joints to pop out of socket easily along with other issues. I would certainly see an orthopedic doctor as well. I personally have taken my daughter (10yo) to Dr Holt in Clear Lake, but am not sure how young they see children. He is a sports ortho.

I hope you find some answers, but I would see someone else.

I am so sorry to hear you and your daughter are going through this. I would definitly get a second opinion. You are the advocate for your child, with doctors, teachers, etc. You will be the one to go to bat for her through the next several years. Check in with another doctor or look into a bone specialist. My experience is that doctors don't give referals easily or tell you to get a second opinion. This may give your child a solution and give you peace of mind. Blessings.

Use Childrens Motrin for the pain. You may ask for a chest brace for support. Wow - poor child. I will pray for her recovery.

Hi L. I hope I can help. I have a 6yo who had a total hip dislocation. The er recommended that I take her to an orthopedic dr. Her doctor did not think that she needed to see the orthopedic but I politely but firmly demanded a referal to an orthopedic because it is just not normal for a child to have dislocations in my opinion. The orthopedic said she may have one of two diseases that cause her ligaments to be lose or just be extremely double jointed and she did need x-rays to make sure that her hip was properly back in place and that there were no chips in the bones.
Having said all this I do think that you do need a second opinion especially if your doctor does not seemed concerned about your concerns. I also think that it does need to have an x-ray because it causes her pain for several days and because there could be chips in the bones that could cause pain. With my daughter the second that her hip was back in place she wanted to get up and walk (and as much as i hated it she did),she had no pain. The next day I had to MAKE her slow down because she had no pain lol.
I hope this helps you and you get the answers you both need. God bless and good luck!

Absolutely get her a second opinion with an orthopedic specialist. When I was young I had similar problems with my wrists. My wrists would sprain and dislocate often. When I was 12 I finally saw an orthopedic surgeon who diagnosed me with a congenital wrist deformity called Madalungs wrist disease. Basically one of the bones in my forearm grew faster and longer than the other bone pushing all the bones in my wrist out of whack. I didn't need surgery but once they figured out what the problem was the doctor monitored me and when my wrist became sore I wear a wrist brace. I have 2 different kinds both bought at wal-mart. I have a soft one and then one that is rigid for when it really hurts.

I now have tendonitis in both wrists, and I wonder if they had caught it sooner would they have been able to do something else. It doesn't hinder me, I can function as normal, but every now and then they act up and I need to wear the wrist brace.

I'm not saying your daughter has the same issue, but if it is something similar maybe they can do something or at least monitor it. At the very least you should wrap your daughters arms with an ace bandage to give it some support and alleviate some of the discomfort.

Good luck!

don't EVER go against your intuition. My son had a broken collar bone and the doctor didn't find it. Go to a bone doctor, which is an Orthopedic Doctor. Let HIM/HER tell you it is ok. They will probably say it is not ok.

Hi L.,

I would definitely take your little girl for a second opinion. I would start by seeing one of the specialists at Central Texas Pediatric Orthopedics group. Here's their website: http://www.ctpomd.com/

I would definately take her to a pediatric orthopedist. My youngest son had some problems with his legs before age 2 (he was severely bo-legged). They monitored him closely and he did eventually grow out of it, but with her wrist & arms, I would definately seek a second opinion. Dr. Frank Gerow is a great pediatric Orthopedist. He is with The Bone & Joint Clinic of Houston ###-###-####. I hope this helps!

GET ANOTHER DOCTOR. Your child should have been x-rayed since she started having this problem. You can't always believe what the doctor says. Make an appointment today! It may be more serious than you think. I hope it isn't. God bless.
