My son's first birthday is coming up in October and I want to give him something special from Mom and Dad that he will always have. We will get the toys, clothes, etc. from the grandparents and aunts and uncles so I want to give him something that he may not appreciate now but hopefully will appreciate in the future. Does anyone have any great ideas of something they did or heard or saw somewhere else? Thanks for any suggestions.

What can I do next?

My mom started a 529 plan for my son for his baptism. She puts money in it every year for his birthday.

The other thing we got him for his first birthday is wooden letters that spell his name. They're on his wall now and he loves them. I remember loving looking at my name when I was a kid too.

Are you planning on starting a collection of anything for him? It could be something your hubby is really into. Each year you can give him a new one, that you put on a shelf or something. My daughters is musicical items (she got her Dad's musical thing he had when he was born)

For the past two years, I have gotten my daughter a classic book for her birthday and signed the cover with a special message. Her name is Madeline, so we have did the Madeline books and some others. By doing the classics, the books could always be passed down to their children. I keep them hidden away so they don't get ruined and bring them out to read during storytime. Hope that helps.

My mom had a blanket made for my son that had baby pictures of me, my husband, my son, my brothers, my mom, etc. My friend made the blanket and her husband took the photos of various family members and printed them on iron on paper. Then they just ironed the pics on the blanket. It is really cute and something he can have forever. We just use the blanket right now as a decorative piece. Good luck and have fun!!

For my son's 1st Brithday I went to Michaels and bought an unfinished child's rocking chair. I stained it and put an antique looking train sticker on the back, and stained over that so it looks old and will stay on. Hopefully he'll have it to give to his kids, like my father did with his.

I'm actually in the process of painting one for my little girl's first birthday in 2 weeks.

I agree with the Rocking chair idea. My mother-in- law started the tradition with my husband and his siblings. She continued it with our Daughter and the other grand children. They just buy a regular wooden rocking chair but then she paints their name on them. It is very special. We talk about when we go to her house that she can sit in Daddy's chair, just like hers at home.

I felt the same way and when my son was a year we purchased and nice child size table with 4 chairs. He is almost 6 years old and has used this table sooooo much! It is of high quality that I plan to keep for HIS children.

Hello T.

Give your son his first Bible. You can either get him one with pictures, or a regular Bible for later. My husband and I gave each of our sons a picture Bible for their first Birthdays.

We did a time capsule for our twinkies 1st. Although my husband and I have yet to put our entries... but better late than never. Most invitees got a kick out of it. And my kids will also have some great things to open and read (esp. from grandparents and parents... ha ha) in 17 years :)

Hi
I have a son that will also be turning one in Sep. I know exactly what you mean they get so many toys books clothes from all the other relatives and its like what can you give hime that is specila? I dont know if this will work for you but for my son I am making him a scrapbook of his first year and going to give to him he might not appreciate now but I know he will 25 years from now especally to show to his own kids. Also I couldnt resist a toy for him so I got him a plush radio flyer rocking horse that I will save after he out grows it so that he pass onto his children . In my boys rooms they have a few decorations that decorated thier dads and his twins borthers nursery and I love walking in there and seeing those things It brings a since of family traddition I think. Also for my first son who is now two and a half I had not started scrapbooking yet but i did write him a letter about My time with him through the first year and framed it and then put it in his keepsake box.

A little about me:

WAHM of two energetic wonderful boys!!

What about a savings bond, or something else that will go up in value. Any kind of personalized item, photo frame, etc. If you would rather make something, what about a scrap book with a personalized letter from both you and your husband to your son.

Congratulations on your twins coming in February! We have fraternal boys that just turned 4, and for their 1st birthday, we asked our family members to write a note to each one, describing a special memory they shared during their first year together. We sent out scrapbook paper for them to use and encouraged them to add pictures, too. We put them together in a book and it is absolutely priceless to look back on it now, especially with hand-written notes from their great-grandparents. They also got toys & books, but I hope this is something they will treasure even more as they grow older.
