My youngest is celebrating his first birthday this month. We don't have any family in TX so we won't be having any type of party. My husband and I would like to take our kids out for a nice dinner to celebrate. Any suggestions for a "kid-friendly" atmosphere but still "nice"? We did Rainforest Cafe for my daughter's 2nd birthday and it was a little scary for her. Thanks Mamas!

So What Happened?

We went to The Magic Time Machine. The kids loved it. My hubby and I were not crazy about it. The food was gross.

We also have no family in TX.We moved here almost 1 year ago from PA. My youngest of 4 just celebrated his 1st b-day. We went to Chucky Cheese and Target to let him pick out some toys. However, I do not recomend the Chucky Cheese in Denton. It smells bad and there isn't much for toddlers. We still had fun just chasing him around. I would find a bigger Chucky Cheese that has more for toddlers. Hope this helps. Have fun.

Hi R.,

Happy Birthday to your little boy! I am not sure where you live, but a few nice, healthy, family friendly restaurants in the Dallas area which would be fun:

The Dream Cafe - http://www.thedreamcafe.com/ (they have an outside play area for the kiddos)
The Cheesecake Factory -http://www.thecheesecakefactory.com/
The Grande Luxe Cafe -http://www.grandluxcafe.com/
Bucca Di Beppo -http://www.bucadibeppo.com/
The Purple Cow -http://www.purplecowlr.com/
Breadwinners - http://www.breadwinnerscafe.com/
Celebration Restaurant - http://www.celebrationrestaurant.com/

Celebration has some separate rooms that hold 6, you could probably call ahead and get one of those and then you could even decorate the area if you wanted. We eat here once a week with our 16 month old. The food is healthy and delicious and they have lots of great things for kids to eat.

Good Luck! Have a Great 1st Birthday Celebration!

Do they like Japanese food. Like HIbatchi? There is a great hibatchi resteraunt in Grapevine right off 114. Not sure where you live but it is great they are really sweet to kids and the show the chef puts on it great for the kiddos, they even have fire, not too scary though? We took our now 7 year old there for his first and he loved it. I am also from Cali moved here about 9 years ago and loving it.
Good Luck and happy birthday little one!

We have taken our children to the magic time machine in Addison off of Beltline and Tollway area. It is a old school house I think. The waitstaff dresses up like story book characters. They have kid friendly menu and will entertain your family. We have also gone out to Macaroni Grill and On The Border, We have even tried Pizza Planet in Plano,TX( they have rides and snacky( pizza, etc.) food that children love.) This place is great for even older children. I also thought of somewhere else that my children have enjoyed. If you are close to a Movie Studio grill and they have a good children's movie playing that would be a great thing also. Their menu is very kid friendly but it is also pricy. Spagetti Warehouse downtown Dallas in West End is also really fun. The Dallas World Aquirium downtown Dallas is fun also. They have several places to eat there also.

Hope you all have a great Birthday celebration whatever you decide.

I'm not sure where you live or how far you want to drive, but Red Robin is a fun family restaurant where they have a great kids menu and balloons for the kids too. There's one in Grapevine or the new Shops at Highland Village.

Not sure where you live but there's a Purple Cow in Dallas (Preston/Royal) and in Plano (Preston/Spring Creek). Kids love it, though honestly it's just a diner like place that serves purple ice cream and some purple cows hanging around. They actually have good food and serve beer and wine and some adult milkshakes (with liquors) should you be inclined.

My daughter is 20 months old and seems to like eating out anywhere (maybe it's my cooking??), but every time my nieces and nephew come to Texas they beg to go to the Purple cow.

Hi R.,
I'm curious...how old are the other children? I was trying to think of a 'happy medium' for the little ones and then possibly the bigger kids??

If you like BBQ, I vote for Randy White's on Preston/near Main St. in Frisco. It's super kid-friendly. Even has some video games for older kids and no one minds if they run around. Coach Joe's is new and next door. It is surprisngly nice for a sports grill and has a big room with pool tables and games. There were happy kids everywhere there. Same for Snooky's, also on Preston, near 24 Hour Fitness and Massage Envy/Warren Pkwy. I just read all of the postings for that magical place in Addison! I am headed there! Thanks, Mamas!

We moved here from So. CA 5 years ago and hope you love it as much as we do!

The Magic Time Machine in Addison is wonderful for kids. The waiters and waitresses dress up in cosumtes (Harry Potter, Snow White, etc.) and the food is great. The resturant is divided up into rooms and cubbies like there is a crayon themed room, a mushroom looking room with a round booth inside. There are magic shows upstairs and a vidoe arcade. Check it out. My 7 year old son LOVES it!!

My daughte just had her 3rd birthday and we went to dinner at the Magic Time Machine in Adddison. Get a resevation if you can or the wait is long. They do have a great waiting area upstairs where you can have a characiture drawn, ardade games, music, etc. The waiters dress up as Cinderella, Cheerleaders, Wizard of Oz, etc and really play up their parts. Its great for special occaission with family. Food is prettty decent too. We just made the mistake of not making a reservation and had to wait an hour and a half! My daughter loved he bubbling potion drinks though!

Also in Addison, if you go when there isn't a huge sports event going, Champps is great - they have a good menu with lots of variety, have colors and baloons for kids.
