Simple at home party is all you need for a 1st birthday. To many people will overwhelm the child. Have bigger parties when they start school.

Winnie the pooh is cute - its fun to be one

Wilton cakes sells a large "cupcake" cake pan and just put 1 candle on top. :)

I'm doing ladybugs for my daughters 1st in October.

"Come join the fun, our little lady is turning one"

Do something simple at home.. we had a few friends over and family and had some simple food. We made it from 1-3pm and at that time DS was taking a nap about 3pm and he made it until 3 and was out.. some stayed a little longer.

If you want something more expensive and easy in a way.. we love Kiddie Klub in Rochester Hills (Auburn/Crooks). They do parties there.
