19 Month Old Very Flexible (I Think) LOL

My daughter seems to be quite flexible...she pulls her leg straight up in front of and rests the top of her foot on the top of her head. Since she was born she has always been very facinated with her toes and continues to be so. In fact when her shoes come off at the end of the day, she kisses her toes and says hi to them.
I was wondering at what age should I consider getting her into some kind of gymnastics program. She's in daycare all day from 7:30 in the morning until 5:30 at night so my husband & I can work. She does really at daycare and calls her friends all by name.

What can I do next?

all children are flexible beyond belief from birth, some grow out of it, some don't. my daughter is still quite flexible and can do things you're mentioning and is 2....actually, before i messed my knee up (about 2 yrs ago, even while prego) I COULD do the same thing lol...like i said, sometimes they DON'T grow out of it. there are plenty of mommy and me places that do the gymnastics kind of classes and you just have to look at the age groups. some of them start at (i think) 6 months and up...some start 3 yrs and up (stuff harder like dance where you need to remember specifics). i guess it all depends on what you're looking for.

Definately get her into ballet or gymnastics. She's the perfect age to start!

In our neighborhood community centre they have a gymnastics program that starts for children of 18 months. It's fairly loosely structured, but they have the bar for hanging, balance beams, trampoline etc. My little girl loves it and has been going for 2 months now. Now is the perfect time.

I think our babies were separated at birth! I've never seen another baby as flexible as mine!

I've been thinking about gymnastics or ballet for her, and I've decided that she can go to those types of (expensive!) classes when I know that she can follow directions and stay at least a LITTLE "on task." If your baby is doing so well in daycare, it sounds like she might be almost there!

All children are very flexible. There muscles, tendons and bones are not fully developed yet; hence the flexibility. I would just do fun tumbling classes (like gymboree, my gym, etc...). I teach dance and I think 2 years old is a little too young for children to follow a routine. Although it is very cute :-). Plus I find that toddlers rather be kept more active with tumbling classes.

my gym and little gym both have gymnastics for that age where moms can participate.

Ask your daycare director about programs such as Little Gym, etc. At 1 1/2 years old, these programs are typically parent and child, and not competitive/instructional. They often have Saturday classes, so check out what is in your area and try a class to see if your daughter likes it. My daughter did Gymboree classes when she was 2 and 3 years old on Saturdays, because she was so used to being with kids everyday at daycare that she really missed the interaction with peers when the weekends came.

enroll in the little gym class. It's a mommy and me class thatis based on gymnastics, and she gets older, after 3yrs, she can do the class on her own. My son just loves it.

Try the Little Gym (www.littlegym.com), they have locations all over the place. They do a great program for kids that age. It includes tumbling, singing, balance beam and so parallel bar stuff. all age appropriate. It is a fantstic program and well worth the price. My 2 year old goes and it is amazing to see the confidence she has in herself as well as the fearlessness and coordination that she gained.

All children are flexible when they are little, but it sounds like she may even be double jointed. I would mention it to your pediatrician, to see if there is any sort of therapy that they would recommend to ensure that her muscles stay strong so that she does not have joint problems later. At less than two, she is not ready for a structured gymnastics program.

I put my first daughter in gymnastics at 2 1/2, she's now six and absolutely loves it and is getting really advanced. She too used to put her leg straight up in the air as a toddler and kind of rest there, it's so funny, it doesn't seem as though that would be a particularly comfortable position. I also have my four year old in the same program, they really enjoy it and it's good for confidence and excercise. I don't believe there are many places that will allow your child to start gymnastics until they're at least potty trained, at least in my area.

I am a dance instructor and am versed in gymnastics as well. I would wait untill she is about 3yrs of age. Most programs want children to be fully potty trained and have an attention span of at least 15min.

Some schools may have a "mommy and me" program that would be a great way to introduce her. Just be careful and do not be to over anxious, you do not want her to injure herself. Some girls that are flexable like that at her age are prone to pulling things like arms out of socket if you are too vigerous with their joints. Not that this will happen but she has lots of time, if she is truly gifted in this area a year will not make a difference.
