19 Mo Old Diabetic Daughter....Need Snack Ideas
I have a 19 mo old that was just diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes.
I am trying to come up with new snacks for her, since they have to be low in carbs. Anyone out there that can help me?? I'm not sure it is the same for eveyone, but I need to keep her under 15 carbs for snacks.

Have you tried Reliv nutrition? It has helped many, many, many diabetics both young and old. Many have gotten completely off of meds. It is a power you make a shake out of and drink it down.

Hi K.,
I am a type 1 Diabetic diagnosed at age 12. For my snacks I liked graham crackers with peanut butter, string cheese, and apples with peanut butter. I will tell you when your daughter is old enough, I recommend an insulin pump. I absolutely love mine! I only wish I would have got on it sooner! Since being on the pump my A1c has been nearly perfect and I have two children now. I can't imagine having a baby so young with this condition and I wish you the best of luck!

Hi K.! I am R.. My daughter, now 5 yrs. was dx at the age of 10 months. I feel for what you are going through right now. I have ideas I think that may help if you are interested...we had to literally figure out a lot on our own as it seemed nobody else that young was around! I am in the Manchester area near St. Joe's church. Contact me anytime! In the meanwhile, here are some great ones: graham crackers (they go a long way)w/ yogurt(the protein) spread on top, Oberwies lo cal yogurt, mini bagel w/ cream cheese...One thing to remember is that you have a liscence to be creative now--it is not unusual for our daughter to take cream of chicken soup for her snack at school, and NOBODY questions it! Email me anytime, R.

Dried blueberries, instead of raisins - they have a low glicemic index - slow release into blood sugar. (yummy too)
Here's a fun one I do with Kashi 7 grain puffed grain cereal, lots of almonds and dried unsweetened cranberries and blueberries:

Hope this helps and that you can enjoy being creative!

When I had gestational diabetes I had a hard time when I started out. Of course I'm sure you know fruits and veggies are always a good bet. Beef Jerky in small quantities and nuts. The best news is that this is a great time to give both your babies a healthy start in life. What you feed them now wil help determine the choices they will make in the future. So having to go healthy is a blessing in this way. YOu may want to check the diabetes section of your grocery or pharmacy. They have so many awesome snacks and foods. I was seriously addicted to the quaker flavored rice cakes. Also Glucerna had a full line of cereal bars and snacks. When looking for traditional foods go for the "diet" boxes or the 100 calorie packs. They don't advertise as diabetic but they are usually low carb as well. Last but not least, what carbs you are able to give her need to be as healthy as possible. SO try to make them whole grain. Granola is good as well as teh whole grain breads. They even make a low carb whole grain. Good luck Hon. It only took about a month before it became natural to check the labels and find my way around really well. If you can get her on a healthy diet and exercise plan you can virtually eliminate the need for insulin, I never had to take it even once.

I am a mother of a diabetic son, he was diagnosed 3 years ago. I understand your quest. Some of our favorites have been: popcorn, sugar-free jello with the spray cool whip on top, cheese and lunchmeat roll-ups. Gogurts are only 13g. We freeze them and eat them like popsicles. At her age, you could even cut it in half. There are some good fudge bars that are only 9g I think (Skinny Cow?). Remember that grapes are typically 1g each. Also, a lot of the 100 calorie pack snacks are 15 or less grams. We have also tried a chocolate soy milk that he really likes and is very low carb; 5g for a cup, it's called Soy Slender. We use that for a low carb chocolate fix or protein drink/snack before bed. Slim Jims are a free snack too. Remember to keep glucose tablets and peanut butter crackers around for the lows.
