18 Month Old's Hives Won't Go Away!
My son has had hives all over his body for the last 8 days (popping up in different spots daily). He's been to two doctors (neither can determine the cause) and has two anithistamines, which seem to reduce the problem but not curing it. Has anyone dealt with this before or have any advice? I hate having him on these meds and I hate seeing him like this. By the way, ironically, they don't seem to be itching him. Thank God for that.

My daughter went through this, well is still going through this. We tested for all allergies, did everything we could and still this outbreak of hives. We went to an immunologist and found out she has cholenergic urtercaria ( I think I misspelled it). For her, when her body temp rises, she breaks out in hives, for some kids if they are too cold, they get the hives. So, we have found that she needs to be cool all the time, no feetie pj's, no hot baths, only sleep with a sheet, the better we control her body temp, the less outbreaks she has! I thought I was crazy at first, it would just happen all the time, but then once we found this out, we are better able to control the outbreaks! The summers are hard, but we deal with them. This started at about 2, she is 4 now. She is on low dose zyrtec nightly as preventative and it has done wonders.

try eliminating different foods for three days. This will help you determine where they are coming from. Like no dairy for the next three days, then no wheat for the next three days, Also what types of soaps are you using? Stay away from fabric softener, fragrant laundry soap and anti-bacterial soaps( you have to wash and rinse your hands in hot water for two whole minutes to get the benefits)
Because they pop up all over do you notice is after he eats or gets diaper changed my kids started having issues with certain disposable diapers at about a year then I had to switch to cloth diapers. I am sure you docs asked all this but keep trying he may have an allergy to something and figuring is going to be tough. Good Luck !

Hi D.,
Just before Christmas one of my girlfriends went to her dr with hives and she was told it had to do with a virus she had (she a cough and very stuffy nose, headache, etc). They would appear worse when they were rubbed or pressure was put on them. The dr told her there was nothing she could do it would just run its course. I don't know if it is the same with your son I just wanted to pass her info along to you. Best Wishes!
PS. When I get them oatmeal baths help.

Have the doctors considered A-typical chicken pox? My daughter "mysteriously" broke out in hives after having cold-like symptoms. The dr tried telling me it wasn't hives and wasn't an allergic reaction. We had no fever and no itching. I had to insist the dr look closer and explained that lotions, warm "aveno" baths, etc. weren't helping. Also that more "spots" had cropped up since the previous night. After closer inspection she diagnosed my child with "A-typical chicken pox". She said this is the strain they get even when they've had the vaccination. Nothing to do but let it run it's course.
Good luck!
