My daughter is 18 months old and has been excessively drooling since she has been teething. Well now she has all her teeth and is still drooling. she drools so much the top of her shirt is always wet. We go for her check up in 3 days so I will ask pediatrician but wanted to ask you ladies in the meantime. Are there any reasons she would still be drooling? All your help is appreciated.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone! I thought she had all her teeth but she still has molars to get yet. The Pediatrician is not at all concerned so I'll keep an eye on it and hope it stops after she get her 2 year molars in. Thanks!

This is normal, some kids are just very drooly. I still remember my sister was (she is now 19) and my nephew (14)like that. These are the babies you don't forget....the poor things always had a wet front of their shirt. I will have to say a nice thick bib helps a little. The stage should be almost over also at 18 months....don't worry.

Hi S.,

my son who is now 4 had the same problem as an infant and toddler. He drooled so much he would soak his cloths and bibs within a 1/2 hr. He was my 1st so I thought it was normal. my 2nd came and he never drooled at all. right before my son turned 4 this spring, we found out he had enlarged tonsils and adnoids. The dr. said that may very well have caused his drooling. He had them removed and is fine now. That is just my story. I'm sure there could be many other explanations. good luck.

S., if it helps at all, my Friends son drooled until he was almost three for no apparent reason. There was nothing wrong with him, and he eventually stopped. I would check with your physician to make sure it's not an over active salivary gland. That was something her doctor discussed with her.

Sounds familiar to me....my son is 5 but I still remember going through a pretty soggy period of time there when I was constantly wiping drool! Just mention it to your ped at the next visit.

It maybe nothing but it NEVER hurts to ask the dr. In addition, I would investigate if it has anything to do with oral motor/muscle development. Does she have any difficulty eating, sipping from a straw or with her speech development?

My son did the same thing. If he was playing with something intently he would forget to swallow. As he got older it decreased. He is now 7 and fine. At the time I discussed a speech therepy eval to figure out if I could do somethings with him to help. He didn't have speech problems but working as a teacher I knew that speech therapists also help with this.
The pediatrician told me not to worry it was normal for that age. So I let it go and it was fine. So talk to you pediatrician and see what they say.

Yeah, make sure she really does have all her teeth. My son is 25 months old and he does not have all 20 so he still drools. Also, I have two cousins that drooled till they were almost 4! It happens. Just check with your pediatrician, though.

S.,
Are you sure she has all 20 teeth?? Wow that is early.. my son is chewing on everything and he still is waiting on his 2 year molars and he will be done. He has 16 teeth now. We joke about getting him a raw hide chew toy cause he is chewing everything! Make sure she has all her teeth other than that I would as the Dr about it.
good luck!

You may want to take your daughter to an ENT specialist. My son (who will be 3 on Sunday) just had his tonsils & adenoids out last month and the drooling is almost completely gone. The Dr. said his tonsils were so enlarged that it probably hurt him to swallow which is why he was drooling so much. Now he only needs one shirt a day! Does your daughter have any other issues such as snoring, alot of open mouth breathing, doesn't like to swallow certain kinds of foods? These are all symptoms of enlarged tonsils/adenoids.

Hi S.,

My son still drools at 28 months. He's got all his teeth, he just seems to drool more when he's laughing or concentrating on something, it's funny actually. It doesn't bother or concern me. I've actually not even asked the ped about it. Figured it's just the way he is for now.

Good luck!

J.
