My daughter had been sleeping through the night since she was 3 weeks ( I know I was very lucky), now she wakes up twice a night. Is this a growth spurt or is there something I can do to help her sleep through the night again? I do not mind waking up with her it is just she ends up being grumpy in the morning because she did not get enough sleep. Any suggestions would be great.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for your advice... Come to find out it was her teeth, yes I said teeth not tooth, she has not 1, not 2, but 3 teeth coming in. What can I say at 4 months she is an over achiever!!

I agree that this is normal. Is she taking a bottle when she wakes in the night? You may just have to adjust how much you feed her before you put her down for the night. The doctor had me start my daughter on cereal at about 4 months. As long as I fed it to her by the spoon and not the bottle. I used to feed her some cereal just before bedtime and then her bottle. She then slept all night.

The only thing I can think of is that she might be getting a tooth, when my son got his first tooth a couple weeks ago we up all through the night and he too is usually an excellent sleeper. Check her gums for any swelling or blisters.

I agree that it is also a phase, sometimes it is a growth spurt, also at this age t could be the beginnings of teething. My kids all got their first teeth around 5-6 months old, and they had trouble sleeping around the same time. The 2 nights before the teeth actually came out they were up every two hours (it's awful but you get past it) Also, you may want to look at her nap schedule. Is she getting enough/not enough sleep during the day? Both getting too much and not getting enough can affect the way they sleep at night. http://www.babycenter.com/baby/babysleep/index
This website has tons of info about baby sleep. But it's hard to know for sure what it is, just keep trying different things and remember, you will get to sleep one day, hopefully before she goes to college!!

my 4 1/2 month old is waking up every two hours. She was sleeping almost through the night, then had an ear infection and had trouble sleeping. The ear infection is gone, but the waking up every two hours is not. I feel your sleepiness!

Hi K.: Wow, you are lucky! I agree, it's probably a growth spurt and she'll likely go back to sleeping through the night in a week or so. In the meantime, I highly recommend trying a flexible feed/wake/sleep routine...to ensure that your good fortune continues. That's what got our daughter sleeping through the night and taking naps consistently. She's a super happy baby because of it. For more details, get the Baby Wise books. Of course, there will always be those weeks where the 3am waking is inevitable due to teething or gas or growth spurts or whatever. I'm in the middle of one right now! *yawn* Good luck!

Hi K.. I have a six month old who started waking up during the night at about the same age. I was working third shift so I didn't know about it until I had a night off. My husband was feeding her when she woke up so she started getting up more during the night. Once I stopped working or when I had the night off, I just gave her a pacifier and went back to bed. I started feeding her out of a bottle at night and mixed cereal in with formual and breast milk. I don't know if cereal in the bottle really makes a difference or not, it is just what I did. I used the formula scooper and put in a half to 3/4 of a scoop of cereal in an 8 oz bottle. Best of luck!

I have to agree with Shelly H. My daughter is 2 1/2 and goes through phases of sleeping through the night and then not. She usually just wants some water and a snuggle and is back to bed but, of course, it takes me longer to get back to sleep. Just ride it out and when she DOES go back to sleeping through the night...ENJOY IT! Hang in there...you are ABSOLUTELY not alone!

I hate to tell you this but it is completely normal! There is nothing that you can do it is a phase, you'll just have to get used to less sleep until your baby reregulates her sleep schedule. Oh, and it could very well take a few months.
