17 Month Old - Chipped Tooth

I am looking for advice on how to handle this situation.

On Friday at daycare my 17th month old son rode a tricycle down the stairs and fell off the trike onto his mouth. He skinned his chin and his upper and lower lips were both split open. It has healed nicely over the weekend - although I noticed after leaving daycare on Friday afternoon that he had also chipped his tooth. (I am really annoyed that this was not brought to my attention by the daycare teachers.)

How would you handle the daycare situation?

Has your child chipped (it is a big piece of the corner of his front tooth) his/her tooth? Can or should this be repaired? (I called the dentist and he said not to worry about it...)

What can I do next?

I think you need to talk to the daycare about their lack of supervision leading to your son's fall and then your disappointment in the fact that they weren't upfront with you about his injuries. However, there is nothing you can do to a chipped baby tooth! I know how upsetting it is to have this obvious imperfection, my son chipped his top right front tooth when he was learning to walk! He fell forward on our driveway and chipped it! Anyway, I asked like 5 different dentists about it and they all said you just have to wait for the adult teeth. My son is 5.5yrs old and everytime I look at his chipped tooth I think of that fall! I know he doesn't even realize he has a chipped tooth but as mommy it bothers me quite a bit!
Hope you can work things out with daycare!

It bothers me that your son had access to stairs while riding a tricycle. That's my biggest problem with this. As far as the chipped tooth, i don't know if the daycare would have spotted this if his lips were a huge trauma for him. If it is sharp, I would have your dentist file it slightly - I don't know if I would go through the trouble of bonding it. You may have to do it a couple more times before he loses it. My son had hit his mouth so many times. He, and at least 3 of his friends, had one, light grey tooth in the front from a tooth trauma. i know it will be a while before your son's toot will fall out but ....how will you get a 17 month old to sit and get a tooth bonded? Would only do that if it bothered you so. And yes...I was that kid who severely cracked my permanent front tooth at 8 years old! Have had a cap all my life - those are the ones you really have to be careful of!

I would definitely be concerned about the bike by the stairs and talk to them about that situation! My dentist does fix chipped teeth. I just chipped mine a couple months ago on a fork. He has material that matches the tooth color and you cannot even tell. Since your son is only 17 months old, that is a long time to have a chipped tooth. Those front teeth do not fall out until they are 6-7 years old. It would bug me if my daughter chipped her tooth, was not fixed and had to wait 6 years for it to fall out. I can give you my dentist's name if you would like. He is in Des Plaines.

They may not have noticed the chipped tooth. My son chipped his tooth in the bathtub in my care and no one sees the chipped tooth, even his own dad. I would be more concerned with why he was riding a trike by stairs? Also the dentist is right, there isn't much to be done. Unless the point of the chip is sharp and bothering him, then they can file it down to be more round. I hope he mentioned that SOMETIMES if there is trauma to the teeth/gums that the teeth can turn a gray color. My son's is SLIGHTLY gray and it must be from one of his million falls he has each week, I don't think his was specific to the chipped tooth incident though. Sorry you had to go through such a scary expereince!!
