16Th Birthday Party Cake

Mom's I need you help. I have been asked to make my brothers 16th birthday cake, and I am a loss for ideas. I love, love, love to decorate cakes but I have a 2 year old daughter so most of the stuff that I do is kiddy. (Bright colors, cartoon, cutsey stuff) Apparently my brother is looking for something a little less kiddy, but has no idea what he wants. I made his birthday invitations to mimic a speeding ticket, he plays the sax (is band actually are the Grand National Champions this year for marching band) and the party is a pool party. The cake needs to feed about 40 people so a layered cake maybe best. I have been looking on all of my cake decorating sites but have found nothing that jumps out. Has anyone been to a 16 yr old birthday lately with a "manly" cake that my brother would love??

What can I do next?

It will be neat. I know that familyfun.com always has cake Ideas. and they arent just for little kiddos.

I second the recommendation to look at cakecentral.com. I also decorate as a hobby and I get lots of great ideas there. Cupcakes are very popular right now, but a 16 year old boy might think that's too childish. Maybe something pool or water themed? I made a cake for my nieces & nephews one summer that looked like the beach - half was frosted with light brown frosting and sprinkled with crushed graham crackers and the other half was frosted with blue frosting and piping gel (to look like reflective water). You could make sail boats with twinkies and fruit roll-up sails.

When my husband was 16, he loved those giant cookie cakes.

I have started doing cupcakes for my family's birthdays. I have seen so many cute ideas on the stores to shape them and make them look like a cake, but the best part is no cutting and everyone gets the same size.

40 people sounds like a sheet cake to me which can give you endless possibilities too.

I bake cakes as a hobby, and I've found the website cakecentral.com to be golden. Just sign up with a user name and password, and there are thousands of pictures of every theme imaginable on there by some very talented people. There are also forums to ask questions like this. I think you could get some great ideas there. They've been my inspiration for just about every cake I've done!

Does he have a favorite kind of car? YOu could do a sheet cake to look like a road and put a 3D car on top. I did one like that for my son's 5th birthday with Lightning McQueen. I used an 11x15 pan and the Wilton car pan. It fed a lot of people.
