16 Month Old with on Going Diarrehea
I am kind of baffled, my 16 month old has been having ongoing diarrehea for the past 3 weeks. We have done stool test through the doctors and everything came back negative which is good but still having the problem. Then they said to take her off all milk and cheese, she has been off all of it for over a week and is still having the problem, they thought maybe she was lactose intolerant. I don't think that is the case, she is still having the problem. Not sure what to do? Is it a possibility that she might be getting in her molars? She only has 8 teeth 4 on top and 4 on bottom and they all came in with no problem but heard molars can been rough? Does anyone have any suggestions for me? She was in the Hospital this past April with the rotovirus, maybe it came back? She isn't having any pain that she is showing me besides the sore bottom, she isn't dehydrated. She acts like a normal 1 year old kid, laughing and playing and being totally happy everyday.
So What Happened?™
Wanted to thank everyone for their advice. I went back to the braty diet for 4 days and added in the acidophilis for infants and after 4 days we were back to regular diapers and we are still good. Thanks for everything.

My little guy has also had the rotovirus. He tends to be very loose if I give him too much fruit. His stool is very sensitive to what he eats. But you have to give it a few weeks.

all of my children had this problem when cutting the molars. It is very painful! She might be getting more than one at a time.

K., an old remedy for diarrhea is plain old jell-o water. Make it the regular way, but give it to your daughter in a a bottle or sippy cup. It worked for my siblings (7), and all the grandkids (35), and the great grands (I can't remember how many, but LOTS ; ) ! It actually gels the stool. It may be a different color than normal, but hey, variety in life, right? Good luck.

the docs always say that teething does not cause other probs such as diarrhea and fever but I dont believe it! everytime my daughter gets a new tooth she has a fever and diarrhea every time!!! Diarrhea can be caused by hundreds of diff things=( so tracking it down is not easy. Do you have any pets? (parasites) have you gone anywhere that where she could pick up giardia? those are 2 things that the docs dont catch right away. or it is possible that the rotavirus is not gone. those are just a few of many possibilities!

I also have 16 month olds that went through the same thing. One of my girls was hospitalized with a rotovirus too. They gave her a lot of fluids and suggested Gatorade because they wouldn't drink pedialyte. We never stopped the milk. If the milk was the problem I think she would have been showing signs a long time ago. And with the bad diaper rash, I would let her air out on the kitchen floor. This really made a difference with my daughter. Good luck.

K.,
Try giving her a children's acidophilus. You can get this at any Vitamin Cottage or Whole Foods. They even make a powder for babies too young to chew up small pills. Regardless of whether this will stop the problem or not, it will put good bacteria back into your daughter's digestive tract. This good bacteria can easily be stripped away with bouts of diarrhea. Yogurt or Kefer is a good way to replenish this good bacteria as well.

My son just got his molars in and had diaherrea for at least 3 weeks with it. During the day he acted normal and happy. It cleared all on its own when the teeth were in.

My daughter had regular diarrhea and it was the result of a food allergy to milk proteins AND gluten (wheat). We did have to eliminate anything with milk from her diet and all wheat. It took us a while to figure out how many things in her diet had milk. For example, we had been giving her soy yogurt, but I read the label more carefully and realized it was made with milk proteins. Once we eliminated all milk products, it took her a little over 2 weeks to start to have normal bowel movements.
Probiotics are a good idea too if she's been on regular antibiotics. They will also help her sore bottom from the diarrhea.
