At that point I just put my son in a toddle bed with a side guard so he didn't fall out of that. As soon as he started trying to get out I put him in a car toddle bed and he loved it!

My younger son did the same thing at about 15 months. I toyed with the idea of a crib tent...but I did like the concept of it. I opted for a toddler bed. It took a little bit getting used to...but within a couple of days he was fine. I gated his door in case he got up in the middle of the night...didn't want him to get hurt on the stairs.

Hope this helps!!!

We have a crib that is higher in the back and we have the crib tent. I had to rig it a little, but I bought it for my first son 3 years ago and it is still going strong. My second son started climbing out at 9 months, and I have to tell you..it is the only thing that gives us sanity. Good luck!

I think you have a rock climber on your hands ! I would just pay more attention when you think he's waking up. I don't think there's any way to tie him in bed that is safe. You could lower the crib to its lowest mattress height, and perhaps put something soft (like an old mattress on the floor, so he won't get hurt if he falls. But I suspect he's industrious and strong enough to get out of his cage if he wants to.

Good luck, Mom ! Soon he'll be in a twin bed and he'll be climbing out of that more easily ! (so maybe at that point, he'll outgrow his climbing skills??? )

At 16 months he's probably ready to be out of the crib. You can get a really low youth bed; we just got a twin mattress and box spring and put it on the floor so if our daughter got out she was only a few inches off the floor.

My son did this. I was so worried that he would get hurt climbing out that we took down the crib and put him into a toddler bed. He didnt like it at first, we had to put a baby gate up at his door to keep him in his room. After we developed a stronger bedtime ritual, he was fine. No more worries about hearing a THUMP in the night.

I believe the crib tent works on that kind of crib. My sister in law has one on hers. 16 mos is a little young..... putting him in a bed is certainly inevitable, but I would be inclined to try the tent.

You might want to think about just leaving the side down (or if it's made that way)--take the front off so he won't fall & get hurt. Just a thought. Good luck!

Hi L.,
I know it seems early, but you may want to switch to a toddler bed with the mesh side rails. This way he still has the comforts of a crib, but toddler beds sit much lower to the floor and he can crawl to the edge of the bed and slide out, rather than over the top. Even if he climbs over the rails, he would still be much closer to the floor. You may want to install a tall baby gate in his doorway then and make sure he doesn't have anything to climb up on to get over the gate. Good luck!

Sounds to me like it is time to move your son to a bed. All three of my kids were moved to a bed around this age. I didn't use a toddler bed though. They are too expensive and they don't last very long. I put my kids directly into a twin size bed with bed rails to keep them from falling off the bed when they were sleeping. Don't worry about your son getting out of bed. It will happen at first. In time, he will learn to stay in bed. Just either close his door completely or place a gate in the doorway so that he can't leave the room. My kids would play in their room for awhile and then fall asleep, most of time on the floor. Later, before I went to bed, I would go in and place them back in bed. Then they would stay there for the rest of the night.

I agree with the other responses-it is time for his own bed. We started with just a mattress on the floor, then added the boxspring later.I would use a gate so he stays in his room-just childproof his room.
