do you know how large it was? if he was able to swallow it, it should pass right outta him. You can always call his pediatrician in the morning.

You are not a bad mother!!! And trust me, this will not be the only thing you ever feel guilty about. My daughter swallowed two pennies and a polly pocket shoe all before the age of three. Each passed through her system with no problems. She is ten now and she is perfectly normal (as normal as a hormonal 10 year old can be!) Just keep an eye on him and if you really can't get it out of your mind, maybe try a nurse line if you have one available. A hospital is going to put him through X-rays and then tell you everything is fine.

As a general rule, if it can go down without causing choking, and it's non-toxic, you can just wait.

But if you're unsure, call your pediatrician.

I'm sure you ARE worried.
Little kids!
I would call the pediatrician's office in the morning and run it by them. If you can describe the approximate size, that will help them tell you what to do.
I agree that the rule of thumb is that if it goes down without choking it will probably be okay as long as it's not something toxic or really sharp. (Or too big to come out the other end. A rock won't break down with digestion).
My nephew, much older than 16 months, accidentally swallowed the metal pop top thing on a soda can lid. (He had taken it completely off and put it down in the can).
Anyway, my sister took him to the doctor and they told her to watch and make sure it came out. If it didn't, that might be a problem. It took 3 days, if I remember correctly, but it did finally come out.

Your little one will probably be fine, but call to see what the pediatrician says. I bet it's nothing they haven't heard before.

Best wishes.

This post made me chuckle because my daughter swallowed a pebble at the same age as your son. Of course, typical me, I freaked out and rushed her to the doctor. They told me that it would come out the other end within 10 days. I watched her diaper like a hawk for 10 days and never saw it come out. So we went back to the doctor. They told me that it was fine, I must have missed it and not to worry. Well, I am worry-wart, so I insisted that it was not fine and I was really worried. So they ordered an x-ray (I think just to shut me up lol). We went to the hospital for an xray, and there was no peppble anywhere in her system. So YES she did poop it out and I missed it. I felt a little embarassed that I made such a big deal about it. I realized then that I needed to relax a little. I put my poor daughter through an xray for no reason. But I was a first time mom to a little one, and to me everything was a big deal. You are not a bad mom. You have a typical 16 month old. Trust me, this is not the last thing that he's going to do to make you worry. I'm sure he will be fine. Call your doctor for some reassurance of this. Good luck mama.

One of my kids swallowed a Lego gun and another swallowed something else. Not the worst mother ever - he's just a typical kid. Call the dr and ask them what they think; there should be a way to reach your ped after hours. I think it depends on the size of the object and how the child is acting if you have to take them in.

Call your pediatrician. I'm guessing it'll be a "let it pass through" situation, but better to talk to a professional. Wait on the hospital till you talk to your pedi or nurse, as the hospital routine would just be totally annoying if it's not necessary.

Hello, This does not make you a bad mother. Children eat anything they can fit into their mouths. I keep finding my granddaughter eating paper. I think your son will be fine. He will probably pass it in his bowel movement. However, if you are worried, you can call his doctor. They can tell you what you should do.
Good luck with your precious little boy.

I swallowed a penny when I was 4. Mom took me to the doctor, they took and x-ray and could see it in my stomach.
He told her to watch for it. She never saw it, but I've had plenty of x-rays since then and it's not still there.

Just make sure he's not showing any signs that his intestines might be obstructed.

You are NOT a bad mother; you don't need to feel guilty. The pebble will most likely pass with no problem. IF he starts having severe abdominal pain, that will be a sign that it didn't pass and you need to get him to a dr or the emergency room. Also be prepared for your toddler to swallow all kinds of wierd things, or stuff things up his nose, ears, etc. My son stuffed 5 or 6 peas up his nose. In an attempt to get him to blow them out (they were up way too far to pick out), he snuffed in and they went down his esophogus -- fortunately they went into his stomach and not his lungs! It's a kid thing; they survive and so will you :)

THE first of many foreign things in your kid's tummy. My guess - it will come out tomorrow. I wouldn't worry. My son has eaten so much stuff (some I've not even known he's eaten) outside and we find surprises in his diapers on a regular basis. You are not the worst mother on earth!

LOL. I know this is a little late, just wanted to share the time when my son swallowed a PENNY!! He was 17 months old and thought it was hilariuos to grab my change and start trying to take off. I caught him, but before I could get the penny out of his mouth...He swallowed.I freaked out!! I took him to the clinic right away and they did an X-ray...(It was so crazy to see it in his belly). It didnt damage anything and the Doc. said it should come out the next time he pooped (which wouldnt be till the next morning)....and sure enough, it was there.
So dont feel bad, it happens to the best of us.

If the pebble was small and smooth, it will pass. My twins swallowed marbles, pennies, even a nickel one time... (I found all of them in their diapers... ICK) He's probably going to be just fine.
