15 Weeks Fetal Heart Rate 134Bpm

Hello,

I am currently 15 weeks pregnant, I just had my four month appointment today and we measured the babies heart rate at 134 beats per min. I know it is an old wives tale that when the heart rate is low that it means that you are having a boy and when it is high that means girl. When I was pregnant with my son his heart rate measured at 165bpm the whole way through. Just out of curiosity how many of you mothers have found this old wives tale to be true and how many have found this to be false? Boy or girl I am crazy excited either way!

thank you

Well I'm trying to remember what drugstore it was but they actually sell a test kit..it's like a pregnancy test but it tells you the gender..It's called Intelligender..I know of 1 person who had tried it and it was right..I wish you luck!

Heartbeat rates were high but I had a boy. And I guess I expected a really active baby with those high heartrates, but he was SO mellow!

Hi S.!
Sounds like a boy to me! :-) It proved true for my two kids - a boy and girl - and for my niece, and my aunt's two girls and a boy!

I'd say, No it isn't accurate! My sons heart rate was always 150-160s and my daughters was always 120-130s. But good luck!

My daughter was always around 150. If that's high, then the old wives tale is right. Everyone told me she was going to be a boy because I was so sick and uncomfortable, so I don't set much store by them. I was also told that if I ate a lot of cold foods, she would be big, and she weighed in at 8 lbs, 7 oz.

I've also heard the old wives tale that way (slower for a boy, faster for a girl). I found it true with my 3 pregnancies. My boys were always in the 140s and my girl was around 160 until the last couple of weeks when she went down to about 145-150. I'm sure it varies for each child, but it gives us something to keep us guessing before we know the gender.

I remember asking my doctor about it when I was pregnant and she said it's not accurate. It totally depends on what baby is doing when you are listening - is baby sleeping, kicking around, etc. I found with both boys the rates were pretty varied throughout the pregnancy. OH, and my gut told me I was having a girl each time - wrong!!!

Hi S.,
Congrats on your pregnancy--how exciting! I did my thesis in Naturopathic medical school on Gender prediction. I did a retrospective study of over 200 pregnancies looking at fetal heart tones and found that there wasn't any significant difference between boys and girls during pregnancy. Interestingly, you can tell once contractions start and they are reacting to the stress, but by then you don't usually care because you're in labor!

In labor, girls have a higher resting heart rate than boys---usually 150-160bpm. Boys have 140-150bpm usually. This isn't a hard and fast rule, of course, but I do usually find it to be true.

I also tested the same set of babies with the Chinese Lunar calendar and found that it was nearly 70% accurate (versus the 52% accuracy of the pre-natal fetal heart tones).

Good luck with everything and enjoy your pregnancy!

Hi S.,
All 3 of my kids ran pretty consistently at @ 134bpm and I have 2 boys and a girl, so I dont know? The nurses all said the same thing...low usually means boy, but you just never know!

Hi S.!

I have one boy and two girls. With my son his heart rate started high early in the pregnancy (around 155-160), but then as the pregnancy progressed it gradually started to drop down into the 130-140 range. Around month 7 it was at 135 and stayed there for the rest of the pregnancy. We didn't find out the sex with him so everybody thought we were having a girl from the start because of the high heart rate. :) Haha on them when we had our son and announced It's A Boy! everybody was in shock...they were so convinced!

With our middle child (a girl) her heart rate started at 165 and fluctuated between 165-154 the whole pregnancy. It never dropped below 154 the whole pregnancy. Now with this one we did find out the sex at 19 weeks. Although I was so nervous they were wrong and what if it wasn't a girl?? Turns out they were right...I was just being a paranoid pregnant woman. LOL

With our third (also a girl) we didn't find out the sex, much to my husband's dismay. He really wanted to know, but I didn't since we already had one of each and I had kept everything I wanted a surprise with our last baby. :) Her heart started at 178 in the beginning and stayed in the high 160s to mid 170s the entire pregnancy! So I just KNEW she was a girl and it turned out I was right. :)

So for me, yes, the whole heart rate thing was true with each and every one of my babies. Let me say though the Chinese Calendar (which is supposed to be very accurate) was wrong with every single one of them. Go figure!

Best of luck to you! Keep us posted if you find out the sex in the future. Congrats on this new little miracle. :)

This is definately and old wives tale. When I was pregnant with my first, I was told that is sounds like a boy heart beat. Even during labor and dilvery, I was told that I was going to have a stubborn boy by the labor nurse. Guess what? I had a girl.

I have totally found it to be true!! Both my girls (ages 2 and 4) had heartbeats around 160 and this baby (predicted by ultrasound tech to be a boy) has a heartbeat around 140.....

well i have 2 girls.... my first one always had a very high rate 165-170.... but my second was always around 140-150.... so i can tell you that it varies. my older girl is very active, a bit high strung, and the younger one is also active, but much more cuddly and content to just suck her thumb and watch things.... i think the heart rate has more to do with temperment than gender.... but who knows.

She surprised them all. And has conitinued to do that all her life :0.

I found it was right on with my 3 kids. I also found that the old wives tale of which side you sleep on was right on too. If you find that sleeping on your right side was more comfortable, then it is a girl, if the left, its a boy.

I also had dreams that told me. I would have really bizarre ones, but then I'd have a "normal" dream that would tell me. I was right each time.

I guess that's why it keeps sticking around... its true for some and not true for others. lol

Congrats on the upcoming baby!

Actually I think you have that backwards. The higher the heart rate means its a boy and the lower means its a girl. At least thats how I remember it. My daughters was around that rate.

Either way, Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!

it was right on with my daughter--her heartrate was in the 160s and 170s the whole pregnancy. this one, though, she's been in the upper 130s, lower 140s. i'm hoping that means she's more laid back, because my oldest daughter is a fireball of energy, and i can't imagine having TWO fireball females in this family!

Hi S.:

when I was pregnant with my daughter, her heart rate was all over the place. Sometimes it was around 130bpm, then it was over 160bpm. We chose not to find out the gender until she was born, but I looked around for means of gender prediction, and most, including the Chinese Birth Chart, pointed towards a boy. The only thing that ever pointed towards a girl was my husband's and my "feeling" when we first found out we were expecting. So I am sure there is no way to predict the gender, except ultrasound, and that isn't always accurate either (my parents' neighbor was told they'd have a girl by two different doctors and ended up with a boy).

Good luck for your pregnancy! S.

At my early appointments my Dr told me that the "wives tales" is just that. I am just about 34 weeks along with a girl and her heartbeat has been steadily 142-145 over the past few months. At 19-20 weeks it was abou 168 which would have meant a boy, but not the case. The U/S tech said that earlier on, is usually the height of the heartbeat, but that between 120-170 (maybe 180) is "Normal" for either sex of the baby.

Hmmm... I thought it was the other way around - a high heart beat means a boy and a low one a girl. Anyway, my babies heart rates are/were all high and they are all boys.
