15 Mo. Old Has Sores in Her Mouth

My daughter has had a little cold since Friday. She pretty much coughs in the morning only. I have been giving her medicine to treat the cough and congestion. Today, I noticed a whitish ring on her tongue. Then, I noticed a white blister like thing on her inner lip. Has anyone experienced this before?

What can I do next?

It also sounds like it could be thrush. That's a yeast infection in the mouth which usually appears as white patches in the mouth and lips. You would need to go to the ped. to get a prescription to get rid of that.

Hi N.,

She could have yeast infection or thrush is what it is called medically. Is she on any antibiotics? Usually that is what it causes, but sometimes not. I would check with the Doctor if it doesn't get any better so that she can get some type of meds for her.

Also try yogurt, like danimals or Dora ones. Usually that is an indication that the good bacteria in your daughters mouth is not there anymore, which in turn causes a yeast infection in the mouth.

Good Luck!

That sounds a lot like a "cold" I had last week. I had a couple of sores in my mouth and also my tongue. I never looked at them, so I don't know if they were white, but I sure did feel bad. I had it about 3 days and then suddenly I felt better.

I don't know if it's the same thing, but it sounds like it could be. I also say if it persists call the dr. anyway, especially if it affects her drinking/eating.

Good luck!!

I would call your family physician or a pediatrician. If nothing else look on the internet under "thrush" My concern would be that it would be thrush which if untreated can cause pain and may cause your child to stop eating or drinking. I worked for the State Health Dept. years ago and they recommended that the area be treated with equal parts of hydrogen peroxide and water. It can be applied with gauze. Just pat the area several times a day but make sure the child doesn't ingest it. I would call the pediatrician first to make sure that if it is thrush that it can be treated that way. D.

It is very common for kiddos to get "cold sores". Check her palms and the soles of her feet- if she has small blisters on those too she may have hand foot and mouth- a virus that has no real treatment. Here is a good article: http://www.babycenter.com/refcap/toddler/toddlerills/todt...

Our office also recommends an equal amount of Benadryl liquid mixed w/ maalox (give 1 tsp Benadryl per 25# body weight). The Benadryl will numb the sores, the maalox can help to coat them.
Lots of fluids, yogurt, jello etc.... They usually last 5-10 days.
