14 Month Old with Roto Virus
My son has been sick for a week - vomiting and diarrhea. I contacted my pediatrician and he said he's got the Roto Virus. Has anyone ever experienced this? What can I expect and how long does this last?

My daughter had the rhota virus when she was twelve months old. She had bad diarhea and vomited up anything she ate. I pushed the Pedialyte drinks and watered down juice, but didn't force any food. She ended up having to be in the hospitall for a couple days from dehydration. There is not a whole lot you can do other than try to get him to drink(popsicles might also work) as much as possible and then just be prepared for some long nights cleaning up the mess and giving lots of cuddle time. Good Luck!!

I just went through this just a few weeks ago. Unfortunatly, it does last quite a while. After the first few days of the virus, he should stop throwing up. Then, you are basically dealing with a LOT of dirty diapers. That part can last up to 2 weeks. We went through every bit of that 2 weeks! My doctor did recommend that I go to the pharmacey and get something called Lactinex. What that is are these packets of granules that you sprinkle in their food a few times a day and that is suppose to help the diapers to not be so runny. It worked for us once I got it. Once you start noticing the poop becoming harder, discontinue using it because it could have the opposite effect, such as constipation. This rotovirus is very contagious and you need to be careful after changing him to wipe down everything, otherwise it could last a lot longer and even worse, you could get it. Trust me, I did, and it was not fun. Be sure to clean you house throughly and take some clorox wipes and wipe down every toy, light switch, wipe container, door knob, ect. Good Luck!
P.S. _ You don't need a prescription for Lactinex but you do have to go up to the actual counter to get it.

Ohh, my children got this last year, it was awful. It lasted for about a week. My 6 yr old didn't have it as bad as my 1 yr old at the time. The only thing my dr. seemed concerned about was my 1 yr old getting dehydrated , just counting his wet diapers.
Good Luck!

J.,
I'm SO SORRY to read that your son is sick. My daughter got this about every 6 months from 0-2 and it was horrible (and very contageous as my husband and I would get it too). Question - now they have a vaccination for rotovirus (RotoTeq) that they didn't have when my daughter was a baby (she's 4.5) -did your son get that?
I would say this is a long bout of it as normally I hear about it going 24-48 hrs.
Good luck and sanatize everything so you don't get it!!

My whole family just got over this (4 of us). Caught it from my 2 y/o. He had it the worse. Keep everything sanitized. When he got it last year we kept him home from daycare for a week after he was over it b/c so many of his class mates had it and we didn't want him to get it as soon as he returned. Saltine crackers stayed down, but mostly he didn't feel like eating for the first few days. We found some Dora the Explorer Soup and he liked that too. Hang in there. This is the season....D.

my son had it when was 1 1/2. at first i didn't know what is was. he wouldn't keep anything down no even pedialyte or water. so i told my husband that something wasn't right it was my first experience with something like that. i wasn't sure if was dehyrated or not. because it was coming out both ends. so we rush him in. he was so dehyrated they had to prick him almost 10 times j ust to find a vein to give him i.v. of fluids. he had to stay in the hospital for about three days.

I have a 13 month old that went through that at the beginning of February and as you can tell it is no fun. At one point, in the beginning, it was so bad that we had to take him to the ER to get fluids in him because he was so dehydrated.
Overall, it took my son about a week and a half to get better. I learned from a co-worker, whose daughter had it 3 times, that as long as they continue vomiting and has the yellowish, stinky diarrhea, they are still contagious. We kept our son out of daycare for almost 2 weeks to make sure that he was completely over it before sending him back.
Hope this helps!

The thing to know is that they can catch this again. So, be sure to sanitize EVERYTHING in the house. Usually the second time around isn't as bad... but you still don't want to take that chance. It really stinks when they get over it just to come down with it again a few days later!
