My 14 month old is allergic to Milk and is Stage 2 soy formula. She is going through a tough time with diarrhea. I haven't changed anything in her diet. She has no fevers and is acting herself, not sure what I can do to help it. I stopped apple juice and even at daycare.

can anyone reccomend anything?

What can I do next?

Give the Similac DF formula a try. It only comes in the ready to serve bottle and has a pink label. It works great and says on the label it is for infants and toddlers. Hope this helps

Ask your doctor if you can give him Pedialyte. They sell it in ice pops, too. Just keep him hydrated and give him the brat diet (especially the rice and bananas). When my daughter had diarrhea, I also gave her flat warm coke and ginger ale. She loved it and it kept her hydrated (she wouldn't drink the Pedialyte).

Hi S., Your little one could be cutting some teeth. That could cause the diarrhea. Keep her butt clean and dry as possible and this will pass. If you think not, then check with your Dr. Best wishes Grandma Mary

Hi S.,
I hope it's not the case with your daughter... but my daughter was/is also allergic to milk. I nursed her and then at age 1 or so began her on soy formula, well approx. 40% of children allergic to milk are also allergic to soy. This was disheartening for me but I switched her to rice milk and her issues cleared up. Soy, although very healthy, is also a common allergen.
best wishes!

I am a FIRm believer that teething can cause diarrhea! Most dr's won't agree but as a mom of 2 I do!

You mention that she is allergic to milk, does this include all dairy, can she have yogurt? She might need some good cultures added back which she can get from yogurt and other foods are now having this added to it. I hope your little one is better soon and sorry I can't be more help.

S.,

Why is she still on formula? Have you tried one of the storebrand, milk free products like Silk or Lactaid I think they are called? Maybe it's the formula affecting her.

Just an idea.

Could there be a virus going around daycare? Try the "BRAT" diet (Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast). Works for my kids.

A few months back we had a similar situation with my daughter. The diarrhea may not be related to a milk allergy. Our daughter has no milk allergies but had diarrhea for just over 2 weeks. I brought her to the doctor, they ran a bunch of tests and nothing came up. The doctor said sometimes it happens and it can last a few weeks. We tried the BRATs diet, but that didn't work. She was eating, drinking and acting fine. She had wet diapers so I knew she wasn't dehydrated. I gave her some probiotics for babies (you can get them at whole foods). The diarrhea stopped shortly after that but i couldn't say if it was the probiotics that did the trick or if it just ran its coarse. Good luck.

I have 14 month old twin boys and they get diarrhea when they have too much juice. Stop the juice altogether for a day, feed her binding foods like rice and cheese. Give her water to drink in place of juice. Is she allergic to whole milk or milk based formula? In any case give her soy milk or organic whole milk (so long as she's not allergic).

My 13 month old just went through 6 days of the same thing. No matter what we fed her or what she drank it didn't stay put. I cut out fruit and juice andjust let it run its course. She had no fever and she was still eating great. Yesterday was her first "normal" BM day. I am not sure what it was, maybe a virus or teething, who knows. It might just be one of those toddler things. Just keep an eye on her and kee her full of fluids.

I had a very similar thing happen to my son starting when he was 13 months old. He of course had tried dairy and we found out he was allergic to it so the doctor recommended soy milk since he had weaned off of nursing but still needed all the nutrients. He had violent diarrhea which was cultured and found that he was also severely allergic to soy. So we switched to rice milk and had to give him vitamin supplements. It took him about 4 months (very miserable) after to regulate. Now, at age 7, he is able to take a Children's Digestive Advantage pill once a day so he can eat dairy and he can also eat stuff containing soy (it is in so many things) in moderation.
Don't know if it would help you but you might want to try switching things around. I have also heard of kids suddenly becoming allergic to something they were eating fine before. (My son went into anephalactic shock after eating some sesame seeds in the pork fried rice we always order out for, something he has eating many times before, but now his body is evidently sensitized to it and he can eat it no more). So try something for the formula substitute without soy for a month and see if it makes a difference. If not, teething can also cause more watery bowel movements - all that drool. Good luck!

Keep her well hydrated. Stay away from juices they will only aggrevate the situation. Give her the BRAT diet. Banana's, Rice, Applesauce, Toast. These will help. Also, avoid graham crackers they will make it worse too.

Hi there S.,
It may not be diarrhea. It may be dysentery, which means..DO NOT STOP LIQUID INTAKE! Try oatmeal very liquidy-lots of water get to a homeopathic doctor who will sell you(cheap-$8-10$) of a remedy for dysentery/diarrhea.
The MDs will tell you to stop liquids-not true and your child will end up in the hospital. Once in 1983 on a trip to India my family, twin 1 1/2 yr olds and me, friend with a 1 year old also got a bad case of dysentery from water buffalo milk that we did not boil properly. The whole trip the Indian Ladies did it for us and no problem, no illness. When we needed to do it ourselves that last day of our retreat program, the three little ones became full of diarrhea on the way home.

Interestingly, my friend's husband also on the trip with them is a MD! His child became hospitalize shortly after we got home because their son became so dehydrated from stopping all liquids when the diarrhea started. The MD's remedy for this!

I on the other hand was never a fan of MDs. So I called up Dan Cherry in Boston, MA and he mailed up to me immediately the remedy (something like called enterecollin-can not remember spelling and do not have bottle) He said to take it immediately and up the liquids and feed oatmeal! It worked -the diarrhea continued for a few days more, the bodies healed themselves (they had fevers that went away) and my friends child was in the hospital for a week! They were concerned for his life. My twin girls were happy the whole time and with no fever and not close to a serious situation!

The thing is there is a bug (viral, bacterium, etc.) in the system, to stop liquids is a quick fix that has terrible results! Please seek advise from the naturalist or homeopathic Drs many are MD too and young children respond very well to this type of remedy. I do not, but my daughters always have. I am a coffee drinker and they were babies and little children when I used these remedies on them when they had health issues. It works.

God Bless and you will find what you need to correct the problem.

Your Friend,
M.
