14 Month Old Soaking Through Diapers at Night
My 14 month old son has recently (in the past week or 2 weeks) started soaking through his diaper at night. We put him down at 6:15pm and he sleeps until about 6:30am. We use the Costco Size 4 diapers and have never had a problem before. They fit him just fine and certainly aren't too small. For the past week or so, every morning when I go to get him up all his pajamas and sleeper are soaked with pee (in the front near his stomach). I went out yesterday and bought a pack of more expensive diapers hoping we could use them at night and maybe they would be more absorbent. However, despite the new diapers (Pampers) he was still soaked this morning. I am getting tired of doing laundry and I know that he must be uncomfortable by morning as well. I really do not want to have to wake him up at night to change his diaper. I am not sure what is going on and wondered if anyone else had this problem or found a solution.

Even if the 4 still fit, size 5 would most likely fit too and would probably solve the problem. Anytime either of my kids started having regular diaper leaks I moved them up to the next size and it always solved it.

I totally had the same problem with my 15 month old daughter. I found that huggies makes a "goodnight" brand. They are made specifically for this problem. I suppose other mom's have had the same problem.. The diapers are super absorbant... Since changing to those only for night-time, we have not had another wet morning. It's so nice...
Hope that helps. Good luck.

Hi K.,
My son started soaking through his nighttime diapers at this age as well. Don't be fooled by the pricier Pampers, I HATE them. The Costco diapers are by far the best diapers I ever bought for everyday use. And we tried everything! That being said, Huggies makes a certain style of diapers called Overnights. I switched to those at nighttime and had VERY few "pee mornings" after that. They worked up until my son couldn't fit in them anymore (he's a very big boy). But as your son is a size 4 they should work for him for the next couple of sized, I THINK they make them up to a size 6. They were more pricey than my beloved Costco diapers, but since I only had to use one a night and they were SPECIFICALLY designed for nighttime wear they were so worth it. We even used them on longer then normal car trips and plane rides as well. Good luck.

I started using Huggies Nighttime diapers with my daughter, who was always waking up completely soaking wet in the morning. The nighttime diapers work well. Every once in awhile she's a little wet but usually not. They start at a size 4. I really suggest using them. Maybe he is just drinking more water, or voiding more at night.

My son had the same problem. Wwe went to huggies nighttime diapers- supremes and saved a lot of laundry.
You might also want to make sure he is dressed pointed down. Typically a boy has urine at his belly because he is pointed up or during the night he has had a dream and he is no longer pointed down.

Itis time to go up a size! Try it just for the night. I had to do with with BOTH of my kiddos. If that doesn't work try getting the plastic overpants thingys (hows that for an official term!) that they use for cloth diapers. It may help keep the pee in. Hope this helps!!

Hi, K.,
We had the same problem with our son when he turned about 14 months -- he's almost 3 and we still use Huggies overnites. He is just such a sound sleeper, drinks a lot of milk and would pee through everything. They still work good for us and we are now up to the siz 5's even though he's a lot bigger.
Good luck.

Hi K.,
We have a 14 month old as well and had the same issue about a month ago. Our solution was to have him drink less milk before bedtime. He was drinking about 8 ounces of milk before bed and now he's down 4. We are weaning him of the bottle so by next week he'll be completely off. Giving less has worked. He no longer wakes up wet and sleeps longer because he's comfortable in the am. He was waking up wet at 7am and now he's sleeping until 8 or 8:30 and that's with him going to bed at 6:30pm. Hope this helps!

Hi K.,
My 2 boys always had this problem between the 12 to 24 month stage. I found that the Huggies Overnights (in the purple package) work the best. I would say that 98% of the time they wake up dry in the morning with these diapers. Not all stores with Huggies have them but I usually buy them at Target or Albertsons.
Good Luck!

Our friend's little boy always had this same problem. They had to splurge on the Huggies night-time diapers in the next size up. They looked huge on him, but it was the ONLY thing that did the trick (and they even tried doubling up on diapers). They always bought them on daipers.com to save on money. Good luck! We didn't have this problem nightly, but I know how old it gets doing tons of extra laundry when it does happen. :-)

My daughter did the same thing and I started using the overnight diapers, just at night. And because my daughter loves to drink water, I also start watching her fluid intake from 5pm on. That made a huge difference for us. I limit her to a small cup of milk with dinner and a small cup of milk before bed. We occassionally still have a wet thru night, but it is few and far between.

I hate to give you advice that is worrisome, but I'm going to anyway, just in case. Your situation happened to me as well, but it wasn't as simple as new diapers. My son was actually a type I diabetic but we didn't know. This new onset, massive peeing can be a symptom. I didn't put it together with my son and he ended up in a DKA coma for a couple days. On the off chance it is diabetes, knowing early can keep your son from getting very ill. It's a simple blood test or finger prick to find out. Better safe than sorry. Again, I don't mean to worry you but if it is diabetes better to know now.

I use Huggies Overnights and also buy a product called Diaper Doublers (through diapersite dot com.) The Huggies Overnights work way better than any other overnight diapers we've tried, but our 14mo still needs a little more absorbancy, so we use the doublers, too. You can put one of the Diaper Doublers in the Overnites, and everything is nice and dry in the morning. Our little guy sleeps 12 hours straight this way.

Hi K.,
We had the same problem with my 2-year-old at about the same age. We just bought night time training diapers that seem to be much more absorbent. We are still using them and while I can't say we never have pee throughs, it has dramatically reduced the number. I think we use Huggies, but I'm sure whatever kind you choose will work well. I also keep liquids to a minimum after 7pm (his bed time is 9pm). Hope this helps.

I would put him in one size larger for night time. I put my daughter in a larger diaper at night as she is a heavy wetter. I also use 7th generation diapers and feel that they work very well.
I would also check to see if there is something on the market that you can line the diaper with for more absorbency. I know they make cloth ones (we use cloth diapers during the day), but maybe they make one for disposables as well.
Good luck

My response is similar to many others, but combines a few of the suggestions, which worked for us, and may help you as well.
My son had the same problem, except it would wake him up at night, so I'd have an unhappy baby in wet PJs, have to change his PJs, clean/dry his skin where it was soaked, change his diaper, put a blanket over the wet spot on his mattress until I could change his sheets in the morning. It was unpleasant for all! I did start limiting his liquids in the evening, but that still didn't help.
What worked was double-diapering and maxi-pads. I searched online when we started having the problem, and saw references to diaper doublers, but couldn't find any in our area, so I tried using maxi-pads inside his diaper at night, and it worked. I've seen some people online who said it wouldn't work, but we used it in conjunction with some other things and all together it worked, so who knows?
Anyway, I put his regular diaper, with the maxi-pad, on first, and then used a super absorbent diaper in a larger size over the top (in my case, we used Safeway Ultras). With the larger one, I fastened it higher in the front, so it covered more of his tummy (as a result, it rode lower in the back, but the other diaper covered that area). With my son, most of his leaks occurred in the front, and the leak would cover over the top of his diaper and soak his PJs. I also put a waterproof pad on his mattress, one of those quilted ones, so it was still comfortable to lay on, but it didn't let the leaks soak through.
Hope this helps!

We were having the same problem! So I looked around and found "overnight" diapers in our son's size. They worked great but were more spendy than I wanted. We also buy the costco #4's. We ended up buying #6 diapers for overnighters and they have worked out fine so far. They seem huge at first, but since he's only sleeping in them it's no biggie. Occasionally we have a leak, but for the most part, they are great. Hope this helps! Be well!

I have a 6 year old that wears pull ups and I remember back to when she was a baby soaking through her diapers. I was so frustrated, and my niece suggested using Huggies, and i have not had any problems with them. My daughter now 6 has been known to have bladder problems, detected in a ultra sound before she was born, just had to keep eye on her. Now she just gets up in the morning (using PJ pullups) and if shes wet she will change into a dry one and crawl into bed with me if early, other than that she has woken up dry on quite a few occasions. I wish you all the luck as I know what it is like. Take care,

Hi K.,
Huggies has always worked for me, but I usually changed my daughter when she was soaking wet. Changing the diaper in the middle of the night isn't bad for the child. Potty training your son will help you cut the cost of diapers. I believe that you can get huggies at Costco or Sam's Club....their prices should be better compared to a regular grocery store.

I had this same problem with my 3 year old - starting from around a year old. I tried the plastic diaper covers (that worked some of the time, but I didn't like how it left her skin so wet and she was chubby, so the elastic dug into her skin). I tried going up a size in her Huggies (this worked some nights, but not all). Then I tried Goodnights. They're made for older kids who wet the bed. This worked perfectly! I'm not sure what size they start at, my daughter is a big girl. Not fat, just big for her age (she wears a size 6 clothes at 3 years old), but they worked really well for her.
I hope you find a solution. It's a lot of trial and error to see what works for your baby :)

Well, I would buy diapers that are a size larger just to sleep in. It is rare for babies to poop while they're asleep so you don't have to worry about them fitting perfectly. However, the larger sizes are designed to absorb more. I had the same problem but the larger size at night works great for me. Good luck. The only other option is to change him in the middle of the night. :o)

I know others have mentioned this too, but my daughter is also a type 1 diabetic, diagnosed at 16 months of age. The first symptom I noticed was her wetting through her diapers at night. It quickly got worse and she was drinking a lot of water, eating like crazy and was very cranky... When I mentioned diabetes to the doctor they thought I was crazy but I pushed for a glucose check anyway... we ended up being admitted to the hospital ER and spent 4 days in the Peds ICU. Please just get him checked, if you can catch this before it gets to DKA you will save yourself a lot of heartache.

Hi K.,
I had the same problems with both my boys. A few tricks I learned: make sure "it" is pointing down, not up; use Huggies overnight diapers; add a plastic underpant over the top. Finally, to help with the laundry issue: buy two extra-large waterproof pads. You know, the kind at Babies 'R Us, kindof thick quilted-like pads with baby designs embossed on them. Layer his bed like this: waterproof mattress pad cover, waterproof pad, fitted sheet, waterproof pad, fitted sheet. When he does leak through, especially in the middle of the night, just peel off one fitted sheet and pad. You'll have the next layer ready to go.
Good luck! B.

Hi K.,
I have a 15 month old with the same situation. I think that for cleanliness (and diaper rash prevention) you should change baby in the middle of the night, if you wake up and are able to. Baby will go back to sleep, and possibly sleep through the changing. One tip I use is to put the baby wipe in my armpit to warm it up so it is not such a shock and wake baby up. See how cold it is and you'll feel better about not putting it on baby in the middle of sleep! -T.

Personally, I don't think Pampers are very good for overnight. My son used to soak through those too. I had good luck with the Huggies Overnights. They are quite a bit more expensive because there aren't that many in a pack but they're designed to go overnight and seem to be able to absorb much more.
Also, is his diaper tight enough across the top? Our son sleeps on his knees, head down, rear up. If I don't have the diaper on snug enough, he will end up having a leak out the top of his diaper which actually ends up soaking everything.
Good luck!

Does he take a bottle or drink right to bed? After my kids were a year old I gave them a glass of water an hour before bed and then usually they would pee right before bed. I would withhold the water or any drinks for that hour before bedtime. Once I changed them I would put them to bed and it helped so that they would at least not pee as much. Also, I would suggest target plastic matress cover for 20 bucks. It'll save the mattress. I used it for two years, then I only had to wash the blanket instead of actually sanitizing and scrubbing the mattress too. Ask your pediatrician, mine said that it's okay to give them a warning and there last drink at least an hour before bed and no more after. They may give you some more helpful hints too...

All 3 of my kids started soaking through around that age. My now 14 month old is in a size 4 Huggies overnites diaper. This worked great for both of my boys for a while. Then I had to eventually add a liner (I use a bladder control pad to make the overnight diaper stretch through until morning). My 2 1/2 year old wears a size 4 overnite diaper along with the bladder control pad (adult size with a high absorbancy) and he hasn't wet through once using it. Once my 14 month old starts wetting through her overnite diaper we'll add the pad to her nite diaper as well. I've tried using a regular or even 1 size up diaper with a bladder control pad and it still leaks through. I have found the best solution is to use an overnite diaper along with the extra pad. (I also tried just going up one size...putting my 14 month old in a size 4 diaper and it still leaked through, but she hasn't wet through once with the overnite diaper yet but once she grows and it fits her differently and her bladder can hold more we'll have to add the pad like i did with her brothers).
Good luck. This was seriously the best advice I've ever gotten on one of these sites!

Hi K.,
I didn't read all the responds as there was so many but wanted to tell you what my husband told me to do with our son .
You first need to cut down his liquid intake about an hour or so before bedtime. Because I also had cloth diapers, I would fold one up in the middle of the disposable diaper ( unless you wash every day or so, laundry gets stinky from the peed cloth diapers) This worked but I found they do make disposable inner linners for night time, My son would wet through the night time diapers.
Second, which my husband said was the most important, Make sure his little doodle is facing downward, not up towards his belly. You can then place a water proof pad under his bottom and that will be all that gets wet.
Hope this has helped

I was a SAHM for the first two years for my daughter. I did not think it was that big of a deal to simply change her diaper a couple of times a night. She never woke up when I did it. The trick is not to turn on any lights, and if she did start to wake up I just softly told her that I was keeping her dry and she could stay asleep.
All the research I did on disposable diapers states that you are not supposed to leave a diaper on for more than four hours at a time. The chemicals in the diaper leech into the skin, and the wet contact is bad for the skin too. I actually used cloth for most of the time, even nighttimes. I changed her about two-three times a night. It is not a big deal compared to the time you would be doing laundry for a leak through.
