13Yr Old Birthday gift...help

My daughter's half sister is 13 today. I don't really ever see her, but dd sees her once a week. I was her step mom for a short while, and because she's dd half sister, I like to still get her something for her birthday and christmas. Any ideas? I have no clue what she, or any other 13yr old, is into. I got her the Percy Jackson book last year and she loved it (and she got the rest). She's read and loved the Harry Potter books. I wanted to get her Twilight this year for christmas but her dad said it was too old for her. Any other good book ideas for her age? Or any cool, inexpensive, things 13yr old girls are into?

Edited to add: I'm leary on getting her gift cards because I think her dad may take them and use them for himself. Yep, he's that guy.

What can I do next?

13 yr. old girls love to shop for themselves. Gift cards to these places are always a hit: Jamba Juice, Borders, Vera Bradley, itunes, Target, Aeropostale, Abercrombie, Forever 21

Another idea is to get a couple boxes of movie theater candy and wrap them up with a movie theater gift card.
Have fun!

Hi,

If she has her ears pierced then get her a nice pair of earings. If you have a Claire's by you check them out too. Maybe something for her bedroom. I was recently in Justice and they have some cute things for bedrooms, such as initial pillows. Hope this helps!

What about a nice keepsakes box that she can keep all of her little memories, and photos and treasures in. I remember that is about the age where I started to keep little things that meant something to me from family and friends and ....boys lol
Good luck

hit a beauty supply store & create a gift basket full of nail stuff. I did this for my niece for Christmas & she loves it. (disclaimer: she still bites her fingernails, but loves doing her toenails!)

Anyway, there are so many cool kits & supplies available....that it was actually tough making the choices!!

What about the Hunger Games book? That is a really popular series with the younger kids-and many adults as well.

The House of Night Series is good also. There are 7 books so far in the series and most of them are in paperback, so a great inexpensive gift. Another great idea might be to make a tie knot blanket. Something you and your daughter could do together. They are easy to make and fun. Matching, hat, scarf and mittens for the winter. Good luck.

How bout gift cards to specific stores that will be of no use to her father. Abercrombie, Aeropostle, American Eagle, Pacific Sun, Claire's, Zumiez, etc?

I don't think she's too young at all for Twilight (my daughter, 13, makes fun of her friends who are so into Twilight, but most girls that age love it).

Itunes GC is a great idea too.

Pricey, but if she's a reader why not a Nook or Kindle?

Back packs, bags, Converse, ipod dock, funky jewlery, big belts, odd hats are all things my 13 yr old is into.

Good Luck!

i'd get her twilight anyway. I've read all of them, and I wouldn't say they're "too old" for her, whatever that's supposed to mean. I think he just doesn't want her reading them, but they are good books and she's at about the right age for them.

I love the Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman.

Going back to classics, she might enjoy "The Hobbit" and Tolkien's Lord of the Ring series.

"The Absolutely True Diary of a Part time Indian", by Sherman Alexie.

"Hatchet" by Gary Paulsen and "The Giver" by Lois Lowry were required reading when I was in school, so she might have read them already but they are both fantastic reads.

You might consider getting or making a starter kit for a craft. Some glass beads, wire/string, pliers and a how to make jewelery book for example. Perhaps a Journal and a few nice pens.

OH! I can't believe I forgot to mention Francesca Lia Block's Weetzie Bat collection. One of my favorite gifts to give teenage girls.

A few thoughts...
a piece of jewelry
a collection of nail polish, a nail file, etc
a collection of fun socks

Maybe you could get her a gift card to a specialty store that dad wouldn't use. Ask DD where she buys her clothes.

If she liked Harry Potter, what about the Peter Pan prequel series that came out a few years ago. I believe the authors are Ridley Pearson and Dave Barry. I haven't read them, but have kids who are fast approaching the age and plan to soon. I also know a 12 year old girl who loved them and devoured them pretty quickly.

Just a thought.
