13 Months Old Doesn't Walk Yet

My son turned 13mo today, and he can't walk by himself. He only makes a couple of steps if I hold his hands, then he kneels down and start crowling. I remember my daughter started to walk at 10-11mo, my older son at 12mo. Do you think I need to see his doctor or he is just lazy?

Hi M.!
THe "normal" range for walking is huge (ranges from 10 to 17 months). If he's doing all the other stuff he's supposed to be doing, I wouldn't worry about it. My son started to walk at about 12 and a half months and friend's son started at 17 months and the 2 boys are now both going a mile a minute. Hope this helps.

he's definitely not lazy! My son walked at 13.5 months, my best friends son at 14 months and another friend of mine didn't walk until about 16 months. It's true when they say all kids are different

I think children commonly walk between 9 - 15 months so I wouldn't worry yet. You're still on track.

Hi M.,
I wouldn't worry. My son did not walk until 14 1/2 months. He is now 4 1/2 and is perfectly fine. You will be chasing after him soon enough!

Hi M.,
Not to worry, my son was 17 months before he started to walk. His sister is 15 months older than he so needless to say I did compare. She would do everything for him so there was no need to walk. However, not long after he learned to walk he started playing hockey and he's our most skilled skater..go figure.

My son also wasn't potty trained until he was 4, my pediatrician told me he'd never seen a kindergartener in diapers so I shouldn't worry! I didn't worry and my son never had an accident, he had full control over the situation when he was ready. On another note...he was talking in full sentences at 12 months. My daughter was 3 before she did that..so they are all different and will get there at their own pace

Enjoy the freedom of not walking yet..lol:)!

My son was a very very late walker so I learned that Dr.s start worrying if they are not walking by 18 months. The benchmark is if they can sit unassisted by two then they will walk. This is what I remember and now my son is 7 and walking just fine.

I agree with the majorty here. My oldest a girl started to scoot around at 3 months, crawling at 4 months. Our pediatrician advised a 3 months to start child proofing. All my friends and their moms were telling me, she would be walking by 9 months. 9 months came and left and I was disappointed. She walked 2 weeks before my son was born; they are 15 1/2 months apart. Someone told me, babies who crawl longer, seeing more of the floor, are also good readers. My son also walked at 15 months and they are very good readers.

Consider it a blessing in disquise, because once they start walking, they are into everything. :) Because mine were late walkers, it also gave me a chance to potty train early, because I could sit them on the potty when they woke up dry, after a meal, before a nap and they were both potty trained before they could walk on their own.

So whether the crawling made them better readers or not, I don't know, but they were both A students, college grads and higher degrees.

Now my spouses kids were just the opposite; walked early and only 1 of 4 went to college.

This is an interesting discussion. I really wish some of the other moms, if the kids are older would share their kids educational skills since they too were late walkers. I wish I had the research my sister-in-law found when I was concerned.

My first born had us all worried. His cousins and he were 4 days apart and the other cousin 2 months apart. They were running circles around him by 12 months... He didn't walk until he was 16 months old. He cawled late too.
BUT by 12 months, he was putting 3 words together and by 18 months he spoke clearly and could hold a conversation while my neice and nephew weren't speaking but a word here and there.

My second walked/ran/climbed the furniture at 10 months but didn't speak until almost 2!
My 3rd walked by 12 months and by 15 months was talking 2/3 word sentences... They all went to kindergarten walking, talking and potty trained :)

I have two boys. The first one didn't walk until 15 months and my younger one didn't walk until 14 months. The each walked for about a week and then started running! Every child does their own thing, but if you're really concerned you can check with the pediatrician. I think it's great you have a little extra time without chasing them around :)

Good luck!
