My 12 year old son keeps clogging the toilet, is this something pre-teens do because they use too much toilet paper? How do you stop this?

When the toilet is flushed... ALSO pour down a bucket of water into the toilet at the same time... it will "help" provide extra pressure in flushing it down.
That is what my Mom taught me. She uses the water that comes out of the faucet before the hot water kicks in when she takes a shower... and saves it in a bucket, and thereby "recycling" water wisely and not wasting.

good luck!
Susan

Oh dear.
Boys.
Believe me, I have one.
Your son is only 12 and I can promise that the more he eats the more he'll....
well, you get the idea.
I taught my son to flush as soon as he goes a bit.
No toilet paper. He doesn't have to be done, but flush.
If he goes some more. Flush.
Wiping his tushy is for when he's done. You can't add half a roll of toilet paper on top of a full bowl of other stuff and expect it to go down. It just doesn't work that way.
There's something about little boys that make them feel like they need a ton of paper. I had one kid staying with me and he went in the bathroom, made about 20 wraps around his hand and only blew his nose on it, then thew it in the toilet and walked out of the bathroom. Without even flushing. I know this because the door was open the whole time and I was dusting a shelf in full view. When I tried to flush it, it clogged the toilet. There was Kleenex sitting on the shelf above the toilet but he didn't think to blow his nose on that.
You just have to teach your son to flush as he goes and that he doesn't need a ton of toilet paper.
He'll be more careful if he gets plunger duty or has to clean it when it overflows.

Flush after "using the toilet" (before wiping) and then again after wiping.....could just be too much in the toilet trying to all go down at once.

Give him a limit as to how many squares he can put into the bowl before he must flush. If he needs more tissue... it's okay.. but after "x" number of squares you must flush before you use more.

L.,
I would put a small trash can next to the toilet and let him know that he needs to throw his toilet paper out in the trash and not down the toilet.
And let the garbage changing be one of his chores :)

Yes AND because they "hold it" until they are constipated. We had our friendly plumber out way too much. He finally told my husband to buy an auger and showed him how to use it.

Good Luck

You've gotten a lot of great ideas and suggestions.

I suggest buying the flushable moist wipes. Maybe he feels like he can't get clean and is using too much paper? One or two moist wipes should be more then sufficient.

Though, my brother (even as an adult) is mildly OCD and he uses a fistfull of paper. He's paranoid about getting anything on his hand. So.. it may just be a talk you need to have.

Good luck Mom!

It could be too much paper, or he may be making very large bm's due to constipation or another problem.

You may want to ask him to describe his poop (sorry). He won't like it but tell him you need to know for his health.

My son is seriously gluten intolerant and gets very constipated from it (others get bad "runs"). It's almost like he can't digest it. It seems to help when we use digestive enzymes.

I have unclogged more toilets than I care to count - my only point is to not just assume it's paper (because it may be something else - at least it has been at our house).

Ah, need to use the old scout camp toilet treatment. Go and flush, if you need extra wiping, flush again then continue to wipe. Some of the low flo toilets, just don't take well to men and boys.

I didn't read all of the suggestions. But my (oldest) son used to do this on a regular basis! Every time he'd go in there I "remind" him to not use soooo much tp. He'd do it anyway..stubborn kid. Finally having had enough of ME cleaning up the mess, fishing out tp, bleaching everything, I told him if he did it again HE would be the one cleaning it up. Well sure enough he did it again! I got him the rubber gloves and set him off to work (i supervised). I think once he realized what a "mess" he was creating and the amount of work to clean it up and the fact that mom wasn't going to do it anymore... He stopped cold turkey! He never liked the wipes, neither does my husband they say it makes their behinds feel "squishy" LOL..I told them to use wipes first then a small amount of tp next. good Luck!
