12 Month Old Sounds Hoarse
My 12 month old sounds hoarse or raspy - this has happened before and usually happens around the time my allergies seem bad. In the past, he was not sick and it went away. I am going to bring this up to my pediatrician at his check up next week, but wonder if other moms have seen this? I have read that babies this young can't have allergies, but he does seem sensitive to allergens. I have tested twice and have allergic rhinitis, but that did't develop for me until I moved back to MD after college.
Update: Today he is fine! I have seriously cut back on my allergy meds since I got pregnant - the netipot is great. Any experience using one or something similar with toddlers?

Kids that young can have allergies. Ask you daughters doctor for a referral to an allergist. Ragweed season has begun! Good luck.

I'm suprised a million other mothers have not told you that the doctors have changed their minds about needing to be 2 to have allergies. 1 year olds CAN have allergies mine did and many many many do. ---- We take a lot of Zyrtec (at dr.'s advice of course.) Good luck and God bless.

I don't know about allergies. I just urge you to consider the sound in the context of whether he might have aspirated something. My daughter had some strider sounds tha tpersisted and they were worried maybe she had swallowed a small object and it was lodged somewhere. Turns out tha twas not the case, but it always seems to me it's good to have a pediatrician listen to the quality of the sound. Kids that age can get themselves into all sorts of trouble.

My son is quite older than yours--he's almost 8 years old--but I recently took him to the doctor for a similar problem. They said his tonsils were large. I then took him to an ENT doctor who agreed about the tonsils and said his adenoids are probably large too, and he might have small nodules on his vocal cords, but they would probably go away by themselves if so. The dr encouraged him not to yell a lot for the next couple of months and then we will take him back for another check if he still sounds hoarse. The dr said the tonsils are also the cause of him snoring, which he has done since he was a baby. He also said he doesn't normally remove tonsils unless they are disturbing the child's breathing while sleeping. So far I don't think they are. THis may not be the situation with your child, but just in case i thought i'd share. Good luck!

Hi B.,
I sgree with Natalie. Did you know that since WWII more than 85,000 chemicals have been created and most of them for household products and makeup! Get the toxins out of your house now, and ALL of you will feel better. Contact NAtalie or myself and we can help you with this, it's less expensive than doctors, and if you can avoid giving medicines to children, I think it's worth it.

Hi, B. - The first thing I would do would be to remove all the chemicals from the home. I've seen countless families have amazing results with lessening allergy & asthma symptoms by doing this. Let me know if you need suggestions for how to do this easily and affordably. Good luck!
