12 Mo. Old Stomach Issues

Our 12 mo. old has recently had some stomach issues -- but no other signs of sickness.

Saturday morning when we went in to get him up it looked like he had threw-up his dinner during the night, but didn't get up. It was just mainly in one corner of the bed and he didn't sleep in it (thank goodness). The strange thing was it seemed more like his dinner just came back up, not really like he vomited and it didn't smell like vomit. Also, for the rest of the day he was fine.

Then, Sunday morning, he threw-up part of his breakfast while still in the highchair. Again, it seemed more like the food just came back up, and not exactly like he was vomiting. Also, he wanted to eat immediatly after he was sick and so we gave him some cheerios. Again, there was no fever or any other signs of sickness. He did have an extra icky diaper a little later in the morning, but otherwise nothing unusual.

Then yesterday afternoon he woke up about 1/2 way through his nap screaming, and he proceeded to continue screaming for about 45 mins (very unusual for him). He finally calmed down when I decided to give him some food. He seemed a little gassy, but otherwise he was fine.

This morning he woke up with another really icky diaper (all over the crib). He still has no fever or anything and he inhaled his breakfast.

We did call the Dr. office yesterday when he didn't stop screaming, but they said that there didn't seem to be anything really wrong and that to call back if anything else unusual happens.

He is pushing a few more teeth through (but this is nothing new) and we've been giving him more and more of our table food -- but we held off on any of that all day yesterday. We also have not been giving him his milk until his tummy settles (but he has been on milk for about a month now with not problems).

I guess I am looking for thoughts or to see if others have had similar experiences. I don't know if this is just something he ate that is taking a few days to clear his system or if it is from the teething or if I should be more concerned.

Thanks.

So What Happened?

Well it seems that maybe our son did have a bug of some kind, because my husband has been sick for 2 days with stomach pain as well. It isn't really like the flu -- more just stomach cramping and lots of time spent in the bathroom.

We did pull the milk away from our son for a couple of days and tried to stick to more familiar foods, and we have not had any further problems.

I don't really think it is a food allergy, because he has had milk for about 6 weeks without problems and was on a milk-based formula for 2 months before that. Also, we really have not introduced any new foods -- but we are keeping a little better track of what he is eating.

I'm hoping that this was just another bug that went through the house and that things will get back to normal soon. My husband is starting to feel better and our son has been eating pretty well.

Thank you for all the great advice!

I have a 2.5 year old who has gone through very similar circumstances. He's just a barfer and been so his entire life. He still throws up with no warning sometimes or at the slightest cough, etc. Other times he seems to have a stomach of steel. We don't get it either. For us, the last time it got this bad he ended up having some virus. It took a week of regular throwing up and gross diapers for the fever, lethargy, and lack of appetite to develop. Be prepared for this to just turn into a time that your son is just really sick.
Otherwise, you just might have a barfer, too. Crummy advice, I know; but I hope a little commiseration helps:)Good luck!

Hi N.,

My 17-mo old had been throwing up and having *horrible* diapers for about a week to a week & a half. It had been the stomach flu - which I know for sure because he gave it to me when he first came down with it. But while mine was 24 hours of misery, his didn't seem too bad...he just threw up several times (which didn't seem to faze him) and had lots of diarrhea (spelling?) In fact, the diarrhea was what lasted so long - everytime we thought he was over it, he'd come up with another super-stinky, messy diaper. We tried to give him pedialyte to make sure he was sufficently hydrated when it was really bad.

He didn't really scream much, though...he just didn't seem like his usual cheery self.

I'm not sure if that'll help any, but I hope so!

Good luck,
M.

Hi N.!

It's amazing what happens to their little bodies when they're teething. It really sounds to me like this could be the problem. I remember a lot of those symptoms with my kids. They of course had the runny nose too but the diaper was always yuckier than normal.
If this keeps happening though, it might be a good idea to just take him in. Better safe than sorry I always say.

Blessings to you!

Did he/does he have a history of reflux? Anyone in your family have relux issues?

That would be my guess...

What you are describing sounds similar to the Baby Reflux we had with our daughter, but she had grown out of it by the time she was a year old.

If you think it's the milk, maybe try some soy milk which should be easier on the stomache and might help.

Keep on your doctor though if it doesn't improve. I had to had once we got it under control it made her (and my) life sooo much better.

We have been through the whole gauntlet with our son who is now 2 1/2. He is on Prevacid (I only give it to him with his trigger foods). Keep track of what your son is eating when he throws up. Also, if he wakes up screaming I have found Gas drops work with my son and calm him right down. He could also have a gastroenteris (stomach flu). If he throws up, I would try him on liquids, crackers and maybe some soup for 24 hours after to give his stomach a chance to settle down, of course I am no Dr. Just repeating what I have been told time and time again.
Good luck!

My son had stomach issues as well when he was 15 months. I took him to a pediatric gastroenterologist (GI). Her name is Dr. Harnsberger and her number is ###-###-####. She's usually pretty booked out but you could also check with insurance to see what other ped. GI's you could go to. My son ultimately was diagnosed with Celiac Sprue (gluten/wheat allergy). It's a genetic autoimmune disease that contributes to every aliment and symptom your son could be having...it's a simple blood test if you want to have him checked for that. (Even if it isn't in your family history, he could still have the gene.)

Either way, nothing against pediatric doctors, but if he's having GI problems, take him to a GI doctor; their list of possibilities is greater than a regluar doctor's. Good luck!

my daughter gets really icky diapers and spits up when she is cutting teeth. we just cut her back on heavy foods and make sure she is getting enough fluids. try giving him some pedialite. that will keep him hydrated and could help settle his tummy.

I don't have a similar experience. But are you tracking what he is eating when he is throwing up? Could he possibly have a food allergy to something else?

My nefew had this same thing, it turned out to be he was eating to fast, my sis in law had to only give him a few bites at a time, and only a few swallows of a drink at a time.
It has helped alot.
Her doc also said no milk first thing in the morning or right before bed.
Hope this helps.

Hi~
Sometimes I have to remind myself that a bug or a virus doesn't necessarily have to cause violent illnesses. If you are sure it's not reflux or a chronic thing, perhaps it is a small bit of food poisoning or such. It could just make him uncomfortable and crampy for a few days and then get better. Im sure you already know to make sure he doesn't get dehydrated, most of all, and call the doc if it doesn't get better in a few days!
Good luck...I hope it passes!

Sounds like it might be acid reflux. Possibly brought on by a viral infection if there have been no other problems. Although sounds like maybe smaller meals and more often. Don't feed 3 hours before bedtime also. Tha could be the cause of the screaming acid reflux also known as GURDS in children is very painful.

I have a 2 year old that does the same thing occassionally. My doctor told me that it could me minor acid reflux, but nothing too serious. Some things my just upset their tummies more than they would ours.

I'm not sure if this is your case, but my son is allergic to dairy...and since your son is 12 months...did you recently switch him to cow's milk?? I know most people do so around 12 months...is there maybe a correlation?? If my dairy allergic son even takes in a little bit of milk, he vomits immediately (and the vomit doesn't have a vomit smell because it hasn't even begun to digest). That's what made me think it could be a dairy allergy. His dirty diapers used to be really messy, and they almost looked phlegmy or mucousy. Just might be something you want to look into. Good luck!!
