11 Weeks Pregnant Still Sick plus Having Major Digestion Issues-seeking Advice

I am 11 weeks pregnant with my third child, and have had pretty bad morning sickness plus I am having issues with my digestion. I had morning sickness with my previous pregnancies, but not like this. I am hoping to hear from other mom's that may have similar experiences for advice on finding relief and/or just getting comfort that I'm not alone. While I am feeling sick each day, I don't actually throw up. I have a strong gag reflex, though. But what is really hard is that my digestion seems to come to a stand still as the day goes on. I am not constipated, but can only go #2 in little soft bits (sorry to be graphic). By the end of the day, my abdomen is very upset and painful. I can only eat a little at a time, and am trying to drink extra water. I also have a bad aftertaste in my mouth. Has anyone gone through this? Does anyone have any suggestions to help alleviate my symptoms so I can get but to my life?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well...I called my doctor and all they said was to try adding more fiber, blah, blah, blah. Trouble is I'm not constipated, so that didn't help. I decided I'd try the Probiotics some of you recommended. All I can say is Thank you , Thank you, Thank you! I took the first dose last night, and felt better immediately. Coincidence? I don't know, maybe. But, I do know that I will keep taking them because, I feel a world of difference today. Thanks for all you thoughts and ideas.

Hi C.,

You might want to look into taking probiotics for your stomach's health. When you're pregnant, your immune system is really being taxed, and if you have had any kind of antibiotics recently, these things could contribute to a lack of good bacteria in your intestinal tract. When I was pregnant, I took a really good supplement called Florify that a friend of mine gave me, and it worked wonders! I was actually constipated, and I was eating really well, drinking enough water, etc., but still constipated, and when I took the florify, which basically re-colonizes and maintains the good bacteria in your stomach, it worked within one day. I had also had A TON of heartburn, and as soon as I took the capsules, no heartburn. It was such a relief. My friend's name is Jana and her e-mail address is ____@____.com She would love to tell you all about florify and help you get it. I can't recommend it enough, it saved my poor tummy. I took it about 5 months into my pregnancy, and I soooo wish I had had it before that.
Hope that helps,

Try pepcic complete. I swear by it. I was sick everyday with my last pregnancy. I just took one almost everyday, and it made me feel so much better. My best friend is about to have her third and she always said she was feeling sick, she finally tried it, and she couldnt believe she waited so long. Tums wont do it. Also you could try the gingersnap cookies in a red tin sold at Cost Plus Imports. They saved me too.

Hi C.,
I'm sorry to hear about your morning sickness and digestive problems. I had a similar experience when pregnant with my daughter (now 2 1/2) and actually had to take anti-nausea meds. I also know what you mean about the #2 issues. I too recommend taking probiotics which you can get online or at Whole Foods. It's better to take the supplements as the dose is higher than in foods. My digestive and nausea problems stopped after my first trimester, but until then I drank prune juice every morning which seemed to help the BMs. Isn't pregnancy grand? lol If men had to go through it the human race would become extinct!!!!
Sincerely,
L.

I know this question is from years ago, but I think I just stumbled upon wise advice that all of us moms should know. It is a FREE replay of an interview with Donna Gates, who wrote "The Body Ecology Diet."

This is EXACTLY what I am experiencing right now. I am so glad to see that someone else has asked the question already and that some of you have already given your recommendations. It is really challenging! I will try taking probiotics starting this evening. Thank you!

Crackers and some warm water in the morning before ever getting out of bed. Try no to morning sickness tea, it soothes the stomach!

Of course tell your doctor first.

My sister-in-law had really bad pregnancies, only to find out afterwards that she was suffering from gallstones and during the pregnancy they were blocking the gall bladder opening because of the pressure from the baby pushing up on the gall bladder causing bile and of course uncontrollable vomit. She also had to spit a lot... I don't know if you are experiencing this too. Anyway, it's just an ultrasound exam to see if you have stones. Then the doctor can try to find ways to help.

Tell your doctor all your symptoms and don't let him/her dismiss you because you are pregnant. You never know, it could just be something else causing it.

Keep us updated. :-)

P.S. For temporary relief, you might want to stick to cold foods and of course drink more water, and avoid creamy foods. It seems like the stomach has to work harder to digest warm foods (something I found out in a book).

I had horrible morning sickness, and one thing that helped ease it was sour candy. The more sour, the better. Hard candy worked best as opposed to sour patch kids or the like. I also used sea bands, which are for motion sickness, but are supposed to help. I think they did a bit. They also say things with ginger in them are supposed to be effective, but I couldn't stomach it when pregnant. It was one of those weird food aversions, just the smell of it sent me over the edge. As far as the digestion issues, eat lots of yogurt or anything that has live and active cultures to get your system back on track and also benefiber is helpful and safe during pregnancy, since prenatal vitamins and hormones can slow down digestion. Just make sure you drink lots of water too, or you can make the situation worse. Never had the bad aftertaste, but I would definitely check with my doctor on that one, I have heard that is a sign of something, but I can't remember what. Stay strong, nothing worse then feeling horrible when you have other children to take care of.
