11 Month Old Hesitant About Switching to a Sippy Cup.

My 11 month old is quite the picky little girl. Since she was 2 months old, she has been very difficult to feed. She was diagnosed by a pediatric gastroenterologist as having severe reflux, although he was not 100% sure. Lately, things have been better. She is finally taking her bottles well, but now it's time to start switching to a sippy. She likes to play with it, but never takes in a significant amount of fluids. I have tried over 8 different types of sippies and found one that works relatively well. Right now the sippy just contains water and she is still getting about 20 ounces of formula a day from a bottle. Any suggestions on how to make the transition?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you so much for the suggestions! We are doing awesome! Down to just one bottle a day and it won't be long before it's gone too! YAH! So, what was the magic trick? Well, patience of course, but to be honest, it's the Very Vanilla Soy Milk by Silk. She hated the regular soy milk (would little shudder while drinking it) but love love loves her vanilla soy! Thank you all so much!

Try the sippy cups with the straw. My son would only drink from those at first. It may take a little practice, but I think those kind of cups are easier for them to pull liquid through.
Good luck!

Try some formula in the sippy cup. Your daughter might not like the water. Give her something you know youll shell drink. At about 9 10 months i started switching mykids over to cups and i started by pputting there formula in them. Worked like a charm. Hope this helps. Also i have had the best luck with the cups with straws. They are easy to hold and easier to get liquid out of. Both my son and 2yr old loved them.

I would just offer her with a regular cup... no sippy. I feel that is a silly transition. If you nursing put breast milk in it if not transition her to whole milk in it. If your out use a water bottle for her.

out of the ones you have tried, have you tried a soft spout one?

also, slowly transition the formula to the sippy instead of the bottle. start with lunchtime, formula in the cup and water in the sippy.

i started using the nube sippies that have a soft spout and handles for my little girl. at 1st i'd give her juice, water, koolaide...what ever she liked and let her get used to that 1st. once she got used to doing that we switched to the nube's that don't have handles and once she got used to drinking other stuff out of those, then i started putting her formula in them during the day...she didn't mind it too much, but still wanted her bottle at night. once we switched her to whole milk, then i started giving it to her throughout the day and at bed time. slow and steady is best. since she is picky, just follow her lead. if you push too hard, then she will refuse all together. my daughter wasn't completely broke from the bottle or formula until she was almost 15 months old.

Keep offering the sippy but dont push it on her just yet.

My son was around 14-15 months before he gave up bottles altogether. I started offering only the sippy cup at meals (he ate when we ate and also had snacks in between meals). he was only offered a bottle first thing in the morning and before bed at night... but I did it one meal or feeding at a time.

Since he still had is first thing in the AM bottle, I started offering the sippy at breakfast. He had a bottle the rest of the day at first. Once we mastered the sippy at breakfast, then I took away the lunch bottle and offered only the sippy. After about a week, we did the same with dinner. The first thing in the AM bottles and last before bed were harder for him to give up... it finally happened, though!

you didn't mention if you'd tried them, but I support those who say the type that has the soft nipple-like spout as a transition (Nube?). I had the same issue with my third, most sippies are just so foreign and hard compared to what they're used to. Give it a shot if you haven't already. Plus, the more exposure the faster she'll grab on to liking it. Good luck!
