For coughing this usually works - rub vicks vapor rub on the bottom of his feet, put socks on him, and put him to bed. I hope he feels better soon!

call the doc. they'll tell you whether you need to do anything. they know best. fevers are scary in babies, and that's why the doc is always on call.

Call your doctor's office. You need to get that fever down in a child your son's age. Your doc, or your pediatric advice nurse (do they have a line for this, or message service?) will give you better information than us strangers!

Your son is under 1 year old.
He is coughing, and has an elevated fever.
You DO need to take him to the Doctor.
It could be anything.... not anything to ride out... in a young baby.
Pertussis for example... is rampant in some States.
Coughs, can be very serious. It can be a typical cold... but it can also be something else...AND he has a fever.
So you need to take him to the Doctor.

you need to make sure he does NOT get Dehydrated... and nurse/feed him on-demand....

Give motrin and then 4 hrs later give tylenol and continue to alternate them. As L. as the fever comes down some with the meds, there's no need for alarm. Then call the dr during regular office hours if you still want to be seen. I tend to wait 2 days before going to the dr.

Offer extra liquids to help prevent dehydration. Also, be careful not to let him catch a chill as shivering can actually drive the temperature higher (its now recommended not to do a cool bath or alcohol bath for that very reason).

Also keep in mind, the number isn't what you need to worry about, its your son's behavior. If he's not having at least one wet diaper every 3 hrs or seems lethargic, he should definitely be seen. A higher temperature doesn't put a child at any higher chance of a seizure than a normal temperature.

Some children are prone to high fevers and its just something you learn to deal with without panicking. My son runs 105* temps whenever he gets an ear infection.

I went thru the same thing last night, but this morning the fever was at 103.4 and by the time the doctor opened and a few doses on meds he was still about 103. But his coughing was from everything going down the back of his throat, lungs sounded great. So the dr is telling me it is just a virus and to ride it course. Here are some things to think about it.... 1. does the fever come down a little with tylenol? 2. Is the cough horrible and keeping him up? 3. Does it sound raspy in his lungs?? 4. What is your gut feeling telling you....
Moms know their kids, if you are at the point where you want to call the doctor then call the doctor, it won't hurt to make a quick phone call. Plus they may give you an idea to get you thru the night better before seeing them tomorrow.

My ped said alternate tylenol and motrin every 4 hours to get a stubborn fever down. A warm bath may help too. Steam may help the cough as well as sleeping upright (like in a bouncy seat, swing, car seat, etc.) If you are worried call the doctor. If it spikes over 104 call the dr or go to the ER.

call the dr.... you should feel comfortable calling your doctor for every little thing, whenever you want. if you cant, ask around and maybe get a different one, cause you are gonna be there a lot, for many years, may as well switch now. i call my doctor all the time, they always help me and always listen. and honestly, i dont want to make trouble or anything, but i was just thinking that its really irresponsible for people (non docs/nurses) to give medical advice on here, especially for a baby and new? mom. anyone with me on that????? .......so, yes, i think you should always call the doc. and if you have questions, ask all your questions. everyone is sick now, i feel like ive been sick forever. all of us. i want to call the doc every night when the cough gets so bad, but then the kids always seem better the next day so i dont. but with a baby and a fever i would just call to be sure. im sure he is fine. i just dont like fevers. and i might have heard that croup is going around? is that true? i dont know. and a bad flu. hope he feels better soon...

I would call the doctor. They can then tell you what they think is going on. The doctor knows best.

This is probably too late since you wrote this yesterday. oh well. Like some mama's said, alternate tylenol and motrin. (Motrin works better IMO). If it is not coming down with the meds, call your pediatrician. You should be able to call your doctor any time day or night. They should have an answering service where you can leave a message and a nurse or doctor on call will call you back within like 20 minutes usually if it is after hours. If they don't, you need a new doctor. But they should. Usually they want you to bring the kids in if the fever stays more than 3 days. Unless the fever isn't coming down, its interfering with eating or sleeping, etc. But you are allowed to take your kids to the doctor for whatever. Elevate your son, use a saline spray and humidifier. That can help with the coughing.
