10 Month Old Being Put to Sleep

Hi there me again but with a different question. When my daughter was born she failed her hearing test because of the amount of fluids in her ears. ( She had a bowel movement and it got in her ears and almost her lungs) but anyways they didn't realize they had never done another one until about month ago. I took her in and it came back inconclusive. But they said they didn't have an ear cover small enough for her ear or the machines may not have been fully charged, so I was like ok whatever. Well now she has to be put to sleep to do a BAER test. I am very upset about this. I was never told about the appointment or called about it. I just got a message from the Sedation Dept at our childrens Hospital. So after I called several departments I finally found out what was going on. I am ok with what they have to do. And so I guess this is a precaution because no one thinks she has a hearing problem. Not even her Dr. She has hit all the hearing milestones. She even hit some a little early. But I was just wondering if anyone else had this problem or something similar to it. And if so how did it turn out. I guess I am just looking for a little reassurance. Thank you!

So What Happened?

They won't repeat the original test. I asked them to. They said they want to do it this way just to make sure. I still think it is crazy but if I cancel it they will just reschedule it again. And I do know what the BAER is for but I don;t understand why she has to be put to sleep. I think they are sticking a probe in her ear as well. They won;t decide that until that day! LOL!! Nice organization! I will keep everyone posted.

I have a 4 yo and she has been sedated before. Is she getting tubes in her ears? What is this Baer? I am very curious so please get back to me on that ! If you are putting your daughter under anestetic.. Please do not give her tylemol unless you ask your docs..
Thanks and good luck

I agree with Nicole W. - I'd want the original test re-run. Also, if nobody believes there to be a hearing test, why are you putting her under sedeation? I would NOT authorize that - ESPECIALLY since the dr. didn't communicate in advance. I'd like to know what exactly the Baer test is for and why it needs to be run now (i.e. is there a risk of bad things if you don't run the test now, but wait 6 months so that another hearing test can be conducted with a properly fitting device?).

I had tubes put in my 6 month old and 2 1/2 year old (within a week of each other). The doctors understand parents worries, and will do their utmost to make you as comfortable as possible with the situation. Interestingly enough - my 6 month old had NO problems with the sedation (you didn't even know he'd had a procedure done when he woke up). But my 2 1/2 year old had problems and basically slept the rest of the day. Good luck.

Have no worries about them putting your child under. My son was put under when he was 5 weeks old for pyloric stenosis surgry and again at 8 months for a blocked tear duct. All the professionals are very understanding of us parents worries and they are there to do their job and to answer any questions we have. They do this day in and day out. Hang in there it will be a little scary but worth it in the end

Ditto J. T. Except my daughter was 9 months old at the time. The nurses were very reassuring and stayed with her the entire time. They gave her just enough to put her under for the procedure and she was waking up minutes after they were done.

From your message (unless I'm getting it wrong) it sounds like they messed up the first test. Why not have it re-done instead of putting her under? If your Dr. doesn't think there is a hearing problem why do this? I think I would want the original test done correctly first.

Our daughter had to be put under when she was 7 months old so they could put tubes in her ears. For us, they gave her just enough to but her under and brought her out as soon as it was done. It wore off in less than 15 minutes and the nurses that we left her with stayed with her until it was worn off and we could go back and see her.

They gave her some juice and recommended that we not feed her until we got home, and they gave her a strong dose of tylenol before we left.

I know it is scary to think about them putting such a little one under, but at least with our doctors they were very cautious and gave the smallest dose that would do the job and kept her under for the shortest amount of time possible.
