10 Month Old Alergic to New Carpet and paint....need Suggestions Please.

Hi moms. We just moved to a new place and only a day before we moved in they put in new carpet and painted. My son instantly got watery eyes, runny nose, a little tickle cough and has developed a rash on his cheeks and chin. My ped recommended benadryl which i am not that psyched to use because it's got antihystamine - but i am open to trying it.
but i wanted to see if anyone has tried steaming new carpets (without cleaner, just steam) to get the chemicals out? and does anyone recommend any air purifiers that can battle new paint and carpet chemicals? and if anyone has had a similar experience, how long do the allergy symptoms last? thanks so much for any help.

What can I do next?

Because of the Toxins in the paint and carpet is why you little one is having that reaction. I would suggest cleaning the carpet with a non-toxic cleaner as well as spraying the air with a deoderizer. I have used the melaleuca products for such things and it has helped. I have also used melaleuca oil to help my daughter when she gets her allergies. I put some on her chest as well as in a humidifier that helps with her runny nose and any other symptoms. Let me know if you have any questions.

There is a great guaranteed air filter at we-us.mychoices.com that will cure your problem. If not, you get your money back.
It is called Atmosphere. Let me know if you need any info. I have one and they are great!!!!

There is also a company that cleans with just water.

You have to move out and have them take the carpet out.

I have these allergies. I can NEVER live with carpet. For new paint, new varnish & shellac, new mattress, even new sweaters, I have to air them out for 2 weeks to allow them to outgas.

Water is not going to remove the smell very efficiently , and you may end up creating a mildew issue.

This is a pretty severe environmental allergy. Rather than set him up for life long suffering, I would just stay some where else for at least 2 weeks if not a month until the vapors subside.

Pooh on the landlord for doing the new paint and carpet day before move in. That may be against the rental rules. You should check into it.

I am sure it's the carpet, my son has always been the same. It is due to the gases it releases. Run fans, open windows, and walk on it A LOT. By walking on it you release the gases. It should pass within a few days with a lot of walking and air - good luck!

Hi,

It took a month before the fumes from our new carpet & paint subsided. I suggest keeping your little-one out of the place until it clears up. You can also keep windows open to clear the air. Of course you want to be careful about that as well, with all the crazies around.

It will take time & remember the chemicals used in paint & carpet are toxic, so take care.

Hi M.;
Homeopathy would be a good start - you'd need to consult with a Naturopath or even the staff at your local health food store on which remedy to start with. We've had wonderful results for issues from flu to coughs to vaccination reactions.

As for longterm air cleaning I wholeheartedly recommend the company I am a Wellness Consultant with: Nikken. Our Air Wellness Pro is the best - cleans all the way to Hepa, removes VOC's from the air and ionizes without creating any ozone. Takes our lead and much more, too.
Special caution: Any air cleaner or ionizer that produces even a small amount of ozone is creating toxins in your home.

Hi,
I had my carpets cleaned by an all natural/eco friendly company called Sunset. It made me feel better that they don't use harsh chemicals since my little on is on the carpet all day. They did a great job and were very reasonable. They service Orange County as well. Good Luck.

Please be careful. I watched a show with John Travolta's wife. Her son got Kawasaki's disease from the new carpet. It is not good. It is very toxic.

I wish I could tell you more, but you can research. I just wanted to say that it is important to get on top of it.

God Bless!
