1 Year Old and Milk/dairy

we just recently started our 1 year old on whole milk last month..and she loves it! i think she would drink it all day if we let her. she also looooves cheese and yogurt. im wondering how much of these things she should be getting every day, because sometimes thats all she wants all day.
i usually give her 8 oz of milk with breakfast, 4-8 oz with lunch, and 8 oz with dinner/before bed. and then when she does get yogurt and cheese, its usually a few bites of my flavored, light yogurt at breakfast, and a string cheese with lunch.

Under 2 they only need 500 mg. If you look at the nutritional info on the jug of milk it goes off of an adult. We require 1000mg so if 1 cup is 30% that equals 300 mg.

When she gets a little older you could compromise and say if you drink this cup of water then you can have a cup of milk. That is what I do with my daycare kids in order for them to get enough water throughout the day. =)

If she's healthy and not have a negative reaction to the dairy products give her as much as she wants. Just as you wouldn't let her eat any other food to the point of physical discomfort don't let her overload on dairy products.

Studies have shown that babies, when left to choose for themselves, eat a balanced diet based upon their bodies' needs. They don't eat a balanced diet each day but it all adds up to what her body needs. She'll switch to some other food when she's had enough milk. Continue offering her other foods but you don't need to limit the foods she likes.

These flavors are new to her. When she tastes other flavors she'll eventually want some of those too. This is the first that she's tasted anything but formula or your milk. She's excited.

The calcium is good for her, but not it excess. Too much calcium can inhibit the absorbtion of iron and cause anemia. I would just limit her to the recommended amount.

she might be going through a stage with wanting dairy every day because it is new to her. be happy that she is taking to it so well. some mom's have problems with getting their kids to drink milk, and i was always told by the doc as long as whatever it is that they are asking for is healthy, give it to them. you know that she is eating.

My son loves that stuff too. He would eat nothing but cheese if I let him. I would humor her and not worry too much about it. The extra calcium is good for her. Just try and get her to eat other things too...maybe cheese or yogurt as a reward for eating veggies, or something like that.

I'm not sure if all the dairy she is getting is too much but be aware that they cause constipation, so try to incorporate high fiber foods i.e oatmeal, fruit, apple juice. GOOD LUCK

I was told by a dietician that it's good for them to have lots of calcium due to growing bones. If they dont get enough there bones break easier among other health issues.

Hi there! My 1 year old son also loves milk and dairy products, so I asked a nutritionist about how much he should have each day. She said that three bottles/sippy cups of whole milk per day is fine and that I should just give him reduced fat yogurt or cottage cheese when he has those things. Otherwise it gets to be too much fat, which can upset their stomach and is not needed in their diet. I still let him snack on small portions of regular cheese, but I buy lowfat yogurt and cottage cheese. Hope that helps!
