My best friend has a one and a half year old that is holding his poo in b/c of a hemorrhoid. WE have tried Prune Juice and the little guy just keeps holding it is, clenching his bum together to keep the poo in b/c it is hurting him.

Any ideas? He has gone to the doc and has cream for the irritation on his bum, but he is still afraid to go!

What can I do next?

We had the same problem with my son at that age. Like everyone else, we too used Miralax. The doctor told us it was okay to use it everyday for an extended period of time.

Has she tried Myrilax? My pedi recommended it when my son tried to hold it in after he was constipated for a few days and it hurt him to go. Check with your pedi before giving any meds though.

Miralax worked for my daughter. I also had to give it to her for about a year around that age.

My 2.5 year old refuses to poo as well. My dr. recommended flax seed oil (about a TBS) in some juice. Once that stopped working (My daughter started to not like the taste) we now use 1tsp of Miralax a day in some juice. This does not allow her to hold her poo for more than 2 days. (She used to go 4 or 5 days.) Good luck!

I actually experienced this when my son was also 1 1/2. We ended up putting Miralx in his sippy cup twice a day. It will soften up the stool, but won't make his tummy hurt. We did this twice a day for a couple of weeks and then once a day/every other day once he started pooping regularly. They are just so scared it's going to hurt, but once this medicine take hold...their life and yours is so much better. We also made a potty chart and when he went poopy he put a big smiley face on the chart. He thought that was great. I hung it in his bathroom so he could look at it everyday. By the way his pediatrition is the one who told us to use Miralax.

Lethicin is a soy based herbal pill that can be used on hemmoroids burns and is a great healer. It is inserted rectally and it melts and covers inside heals and stops the burning. It worked when none of the mess given by doc worked. Read it in prevention mag.

My son did the same thing. He would pass poo the size of large bananas (at 1-1/2 yo. The cream didn't help much, it still hurt coming out. Doctor had me give him Bilberry (natural - over the counter, WalMart or anywhere). I'd open the capsule and sprinkle it over applesauce or mix it in peanut butter, etc. Or your doctor may suggest a stool softener.

Actually the think that hleped the most: pancakes with peanut butter and syrup spread on them. It softens the stool naturally.

Good luck!

My daughter has always been slightly constipated. We give her Miralax as well - about a tbsp or so every evening. Also, I've heard that pumpkin pie filling is a natural laxative. One of my girlfriends makes her kids pumpkin pancakes with the pumpkin pie filling whenever they are constipated.

I second the Miralax response. My pediatrician told me to give it my son who also refused to go. We had to use it almost daily for almost a year, and it worked well. I can't remember how much we gave him, so I would have her check the idea out with her pediatrician.
