My daughter has been switched from Similac Advanced with Iron to Similac Advance Soy (I think its called) because she has severe projectile vomit, diahria, gas, etc etc. Well since being switch a week ago this Sun she seems to be happier she actually looks around for awhile now taking in the world rather then crying all the time from the discomfort but my question is. When she is asleep she will just all of a sudden wake up and spit up ALOT. I mean several times a day im changing her clothes because of the spit up. I never had this problem with my son so Im clueless on if she just needs more time to adjust or if she needs a different formula. Its 2 days shy of a week and if I need to wait longer to see if she adjusts how much longer do I give her? Its just that when she is awke she seems happier. Advice Pls

What can I do next?

We went through several types before we found what works for our child. We tried Enfamil Soy and only used it for one day before we switched to Lactose Free.

We didnt wait a week...she was having diarea and this was something we werent going to accept.

After switching her to Lactose Free Formula she had no prob. what so ever.

At one year and we switched to milk - it turns out she is Lactose intol. She could not drink reg. milk

She can only drink Lactaid Milk Brand for some reason any other brand she will spit up projectile vomit.

Even one sip of reg milk and she spits up.

I would say try Lactose free milk.

It sounds like REFLUX go to a Gastro Doc and find out whats going on don't wait pedis will have you try this and that and before you know it she has lost weight and wont eat at all... Its best to go right to the sort and not waste any time.

I have also heard that soy can be highly allergic and is not always the right choice. I would try Enfamil not similac and go with the Enfamil AR its designed to thicken in the stomach when it mixes with the acids so your baby does not spit up.

Also, SOY formula still has some milk derrivitives in it... so if its a true milk allergy you would need the nurtimigen formula not the soy.
Good luck

Hi N.,
My vote is infant reflux also. This is not normal at all. My son had it and I was changing formula's thinking that was the problem. He would go through a honeymoon period, as I would call it for about a week or so and then problems would arise again.
When reflux babies lie down the muscle that keeps the acid/food in the tummy is most of the time under developed and comes up in their esophagus and thus spit up and pain are common. After some time of this happening it causes an ulcer to develop in the esophagus. Some babies are happy spitters and it seems to not cause any pain just messy. But if you notice that she is crying alot again I would be aggressive in finding an answer. We ended up using liquid Zantac for almost a year, it saved us! Once he started to sit up and walk more we no longer needed the meds.
Best Regards,
C.

Hello N.,

Congratulations! new baby girl... oh that brings sweet memories. You did not mention if you do any breastfeeding. if you do, you may need to skip dairy products too. and Make sure the formula is completely dairy free. it might not. Also, ask the pediatrician, what if she's not tolerating the soy? My Godson had milk and soy allergies when he was an infant. before going on to Rx meds for spitup... check out other milks. ~C.~

You didn't mention what kind of bottles you were giving your daughter. My son had acid reflux (was on prescription meds for a little over the first year of his life). What helped the most was Dr. Brown's bottles. They are specifically designed to reduce colic, gas (because of air going through nipple) and other things, I'm sure. I swear by them now. They are a little more expensive and have more parts to boil, but are WONDERFUL! They can be found at Target for sure and now they are starting to carry them at Wal-mart! Good luck!

My son did the same thing turns out he had reflux. The best formula we found was enfamil AR it is a thicker formula and it worked wonders for us.it took about a week for the spitting up to slow down. Also it is quite thick so if you go to babies rus you can find a formula mixer that goes down in the bottle to stir it up it works great.Or you can make you bottles the night before that way there is not lumps. This formula saved us a lot of laundry. You migh also consider going to the doc for reflux testing it is ver noinvasive. They give them a bottle of some kind of dye stuff and then watch them under an exray machine to see if they have reflux. Then you can get some meds for it.The meds helped but the formula actually helped us more. Not all of the stores have it it is in a red can.

We had similar issues with our daughter(who is now 18 months old). We tried every single formula out there-she had the same symptoms that your child has plus some. We ended up using Nutramagen by Enfamil(or Alimentum by Similac is the same thing). There are more expensive but they do wonders. She was diagnosed at 3 months with acid reflux and milk protein allergy. she ended up needing to be on medicine for the reflux. One thing that helped a lot when she slept was to prop her up. The dr explained that with the reflux the sphincter at the bottom of the esophagus that closes off the stomach was not closing all the way(it was just not developed enough yet) so when she laid down all of the fluid she drank would come right back up her esophagus-causing a gag reflex. the propping up helps because gravity helps keep it down. We tried lots of options for propping up-she slept in a swing that was angled, we also had a basinett that was angled. The best thing we ended up using was a boppy from Walmart-it has an extra piece of cloth that goes between the babies legs and velcros onto the boppy-this way their head rests on the boppy and the cloth holds them in place. She slept much better. After as many days on the Soy I think she would have adjusted by now. I would try out the Nutramagen and see how she does. Your Dr can give you a sample can to try if you dont want to buy it. There is one other formula made by Enfamil called Enfamil AR-it is thicker so it is heavier and stays down better.

I know that some spitup is definitely normal, and it can be worse when they are laying on their backs, but I would recommend calling her doctor office and seeing what they think. It has not been that long for her to adjust to the new formula, but I would want to talk to one of the nurses to see what they recommend.

Good luck and congratulations on your new baby!

Ask pediatrician about switching to Enfamil formulas. My nephew had a lot of projectile vomiting episodes as a infant and when he got switched to the Enfamil brand, he did much better. (Both my children now 9/16 started with Similac but were changed to Enfamil due to vomiting issues. I personally liked the consistency of it and the smell.) He was also feed on a slant in his moms arms or whoever was feeding him and never flat. He was burped sitting up and not over the shoulder and was not immediately laid down after each feeding.

We didn't have a lot of luck with Similac. My second daughter spit up fairly often and had gas, so we switched to Enfamil Gentlease. It worked well for her. Enfamil also makes a Nutramigin for babies who spit up a lot. It has rice starch in it to help keep it in their tummies. Talk to your pedi and see what s/he recommends.

I agree with Emfamil. We use powder Emfamil Gentlease - partially broken down and less lactose but still milk based. Our son does not have a reflux problem, but he is VERY picky about what he will eat. We are supplementing his breast milk with formula. We tried Similac first and he would ONLY eat the liquid in the 2 oz bottles (his dirty diapers were disgusting, and he sometime did spit up with it.) When we tried anything else Similac he would refuse it instantly, especialy from powder. Then we tried the Gentlease powder, and he has no problems with it. Not only can you get a sample from your ped, but calling the company and asking for a sample and coupon works. Good luck. I know it's very frustrating!

Have you been to your pediatrician about this. It might be refulx. My brother had projectile vomiting when he was a baby and ended up having surgery to correct it. You definantly want to get this taken care of. If you baby is spitting up everything going in, she might become dehydrated. You might try a different brand of formula. Our pediatrician told us Good Start is easier on babies tummies.

Hi N.,

Has your doctor talked to you about your daughter having acid reflux? My 4mo was doing similar things (even spitting up out of her nose!). We've been using Enfamil Gentlease for 'fussy and gassy' babies, but DD has been on Axid and is now on Prevacid (in baby doses).

Also try feeding her sitting up and not moving her at all for 30 minutes after. This really helps DD keep hers down.

Good luck!!

Hi N.,

I experienced the same problem with my daughter and so I put her on Enfamil ProSobee. It's soy formula and after I put her on that she did so much better. I gave her only about 4 days to see if she was better since I switched and she was a lot better at about 5 days after being on it. If you try it hope it helps. Also, if she cries a lot, has gas and draws up her legs she could be developing colic and the only thing you can do for colic is give her Mylicon drops. It relives pressure in her tummy that's causing the gas and will make her happier. Hope this helps.
