1 1/2 Month Old with Formula Problems

My daughter has been switched from Similac Advanced with Iron to Similac Advance Soy (I think its called) because she has severe projectile vomit, diahria, gas, etc etc. Well since being switch a week ago this Sun she seems to be happier she actually looks around for awhile now taking in the world rather then crying all the time from the discomfort but my question is. When she is asleep she will just all of a sudden wake up and spit up ALOT. I mean several times a day im changing her clothes because of the spit up. I never had this problem with my son so Im clueless on if she just needs more time to adjust or if she needs a different formula. Its 2 days shy of a week and if I need to wait longer to see if she adjusts how much longer do I give her? Its just that when she is awke she seems happier. Advice Pls

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

Our baby girl is much better now. She had pyloric stenosis and had surgery to correct it yesterday. Im just glad that she is great and hopefully we can go home tomorrow.

Hi N.,

I experienced the same problem with my daughter and so I put her on Enfamil ProSobee. It's soy formula and after I put her on that she did so much better. I gave her only about 4 days to see if she was better since I switched and she was a lot better at about 5 days after being on it. If you try it hope it helps. Also, if she cries a lot, has gas and draws up her legs she could be developing colic and the only thing you can do for colic is give her Mylicon drops. It relives pressure in her tummy that's causing the gas and will make her happier. Hope this helps.

Hi N.,

Has your doctor talked to you about your daughter having acid reflux? My 4mo was doing similar things (even spitting up out of her nose!). We've been using Enfamil Gentlease for 'fussy and gassy' babies, but DD has been on Axid and is now on Prevacid (in baby doses).

Also try feeding her sitting up and not moving her at all for 30 minutes after. This really helps DD keep hers down.

Good luck!!

Have you been to your pediatrician about this. It might be refulx. My brother had projectile vomiting when he was a baby and ended up having surgery to correct it. You definantly want to get this taken care of. If you baby is spitting up everything going in, she might become dehydrated. You might try a different brand of formula. Our pediatrician told us Good Start is easier on babies tummies.

Hi,

My son had the same issues with formula...we went through 3 differant kinds before we found the right one he could hold...i tried the enfamil prosobee and was a little better for a couple of months and then i had to switch to nutramagin for the rest of his formula life... try asking your doctor and see what he/she says...and you may want to ask them to check for acid reflux..aiden had that problem when he was an infant... hope this helps...

We didn't have a lot of luck with Similac. My second daughter spit up fairly often and had gas, so we switched to Enfamil Gentlease. It worked well for her. Enfamil also makes a Nutramigin for babies who spit up a lot. It has rice starch in it to help keep it in their tummies. Talk to your pedi and see what s/he recommends.

Ask pediatrician about switching to Enfamil formulas. My nephew had a lot of projectile vomiting episodes as a infant and when he got switched to the Enfamil brand, he did much better. (Both my children now 9/16 started with Similac but were changed to Enfamil due to vomiting issues. I personally liked the consistency of it and the smell.) He was also feed on a slant in his moms arms or whoever was feeding him and never flat. He was burped sitting up and not over the shoulder and was not immediately laid down after each feeding.

I know that some spitup is definitely normal, and it can be worse when they are laying on their backs, but I would recommend calling her doctor office and seeing what they think. It has not been that long for her to adjust to the new formula, but I would want to talk to one of the nurses to see what they recommend.

Good luck and congratulations on your new baby!

We had similar issues with our daughter(who is now 18 months old). We tried every single formula out there-she had the same symptoms that your child has plus some. We ended up using Nutramagen by Enfamil(or Alimentum by Similac is the same thing). There are more expensive but they do wonders. She was diagnosed at 3 months with acid reflux and milk protein allergy. she ended up needing to be on medicine for the reflux. One thing that helped a lot when she slept was to prop her up. The dr explained that with the reflux the sphincter at the bottom of the esophagus that closes off the stomach was not closing all the way(it was just not developed enough yet) so when she laid down all of the fluid she drank would come right back up her esophagus-causing a gag reflex. the propping up helps because gravity helps keep it down. We tried lots of options for propping up-she slept in a swing that was angled, we also had a basinett that was angled. The best thing we ended up using was a boppy from Walmart-it has an extra piece of cloth that goes between the babies legs and velcros onto the boppy-this way their head rests on the boppy and the cloth holds them in place. She slept much better. After as many days on the Soy I think she would have adjusted by now. I would try out the Nutramagen and see how she does. Your Dr can give you a sample can to try if you dont want to buy it. There is one other formula made by Enfamil called Enfamil AR-it is thicker so it is heavier and stays down better.
