Hello everyone, my daughter is almost 28 months old and she was playing just fine all day today, but when she woke up from her nap she had a fever of 101.6. I gave her Motrin and it went away and she was playing fine after that. Tonight she seemed a bit restless but just woke up at 1:00 am and was crying so I went to get her and she was burning up. She has 103.2 now. I gave her some Tylonal this time and took her clothes off to cool her down. I couldn't get her to drink anything either. Is there something going around out there causing this kind of fever?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Ok, thank you all for your responses! The Pediatrician said it's just a bug and will have to run it's course. She said it probably has to do with the constant change in weather lately. She said to alternate the tylonal and motrin to keep the fever down. She acts fine, running around and playing, but when the fever starts coming back she just wants to be held and cries. I hate it when our little ones get sick. Also, I found out yesterday that my new addition to the family will be another girl!

Sounds like my son almost to the tee.... A couple of weeks ago had a simiar situation. Took him in they did an instant strep and it was negative and then a lab sent strep and the results came back negative too.. It wasn't his ears either... He did not eat for days and the fever was high too. Used the Motrin and tyleno alternating method to help him and tried fluids and italian ice etc gatorade... It lasted a few days total about five till he was better.

My daughter had the same thing a few weeks ago and I just keept thinking it was a fever and finally 3 days later i took her to the doctor and they told me she had ear infectons in both ears. She had to be on antibotics for a weeks in a half. You might want to call her docotor or take her in there.

A mom in my play group had her son in the emergency room last Wed. night for a high fever like this I believe she said 104.5 and they said it was a virus going around and to keep the fever down and comfortable. Another mom said her son was just getting over an ear infection with a cold fever or 101.5, so far we've only gotten the cold with a small fever. Hope your baby girl feels better soon!! Happy Holidays!!

I would never give a 28 month old child motrin. Try cool compresses on her neck and forehead and give her ice chips to get liquid into her body. The fever is the body's way of fighting off the infection. Sometimes a cool bath will help. If the fever goes higher, call your doctor.

Hope this helps

After reading the other replies, I guess that motrin seems to be the drug of choice with young mothers. Since I am a grandmother, now, I guess that I am out of touch; however, I still go with the cool compresses, cool bath and ice chips if you cannot get her to drink water or apple juice (organic, of course).

You can find some "Cool Patches" in CVS or walgreens, they are placed on the forehead of your child and it helps cool them down. I also use popsicles. They have been so big on medication for kids now, I would suggest the baby tylonol, that is what the doctors are telling parents to use. Of course the fever is usually a sign of infection, teething or maybe flu, I would keep an eye on her, it won't hurt to see the doctor as soon as possible, now a days a simple nose swab will tell you if they have the flu.

Go ahead to the doctor, but it is probably just a virus. My doc said not to go to the hospital until 106 believe it or not! My son would go through this, one time we had to have him on Tylenol/Motrin for three days, his highest was 104.7. Then is just broke and he was fine. Really the only reason to take her in would be to rule out the ear infections, but at 28 months old, I think she could communicate her ears hurting to you.

That is a really high fever for a baby. I would go to the hospital or at the very least call her md. Good luck!

This is iffy. My experience is that I didn't worry too much about the high fever as long as my son was responsive and not crying his head off. He spikes pretty good fevers, but I always do what you did, I undress him, wipe down his body with luke warm water (which she'll hate because it hurts a little from the fever) and then keep him cool with just a white undershirt and underpants. Motrin works better for fever. If it doesn't break and she's uncomfortable, call your doc just to be careful. Good Luck!

Any fever over 103 needs to see the doc... I'd take her right away to rule out something very serious. It may just be a virus, but you want to be sure.

Good luck! And keep trying to push those clear fluids into her. A lukewarm bath always makes my girl feel better with a high fever too!

My son (almost 4 now) goes through times where he just spikes a fever with no other symptoms at all. It'll stick for a few days thenjust disappear. He goes in cycles like that. It's really weird. So we give him Motrin, and if he doesn't feel like drinking or eating then we give him popsicles so he keeps his fluids up. Also, we noticed that his fevers will go down during the days and spike at night for whatever wierd reason, so keep up on the med's at night and you can let it slack during the day to see if keeps coming back. Best of luck! Jen

Last week my 20month old had a fever of 102 for three days. He wouldn't eat but he drank. I just kept giving him Motrin to keep it down I think every six hrs. that seemed to help. Eventually it went away. The doctor says it's that time of year and just to make sure he drinks plenty of fluids. Hope She feels better soon!

J.,
One thing I have learned with my 2 boys is that fevers can matter and that fevers can be nothing... we call them mystery fevers. The general concensus I've found with doctors and other professional advice (grandparents and friends don't qualify as pro advice in my book... too many old wives tales and 'the way it used to be's') is that a fever of 102 or less is of little concern unless there's obvious pain... like a sore throat or headache. Fevers are our way of fighting off infection. If the fever reaches 102, treat with Tylenol or Motrin... I prefer Motrin. It works faster and longer and is an NSAID, so it actually treats PAIN as opposed to just blocking pain receptors.
Anyway, if the fever doesn't respond after an hour or so to pain reliever, contact the pediatrician. I have always found they say to give a little bit more of whichever med you've given already or give a dose of the other. We always have Tylenol and Motrin (or Advil) on hand and have frequently given both. Even a fever of 103 for a little one isn't a reason for panic necessarily. My boys have had severe ear infections and strep throat with less than 102 and nothing but a mystery fever at 104. KIDS! They'll always drive you nuts.
Other things that help... like you said, strip her down to help cool her off a little quicker and also a cool, wet washcloth... nothing to shock the little body like throwing them into an ice bath... stupid advice I've received on more than one occasion! Just some non-medical interventions like cooling them down with a cool washcloth and, if you can, having them drink some water, suck on an ice pop, etc.
Good luck with your little one and pending little one! I'd definitely recommend you let her doctor know about the fever, even if it's gone. They will reassure you one way or the other!
Good luck J.!

My two children had that a few months ago. A high fever, but it never really developed into anything else and went away after a couple of days. 1/2 of the day care was sent home over the course of 3 days with it.

It that's what it is, it will go away soon.

hi J.. tis the season for sick kiddies! unfortunately, there is tons of stuff going around. some advice for you from a mother of three kids under three and an emergency room nurse: follow your daughters cues... is she eating? peeing? pooping? drinking? does she have a rash? does she appear lethargic (real sleepy)? when she cries are there tears? has she been around sick people? does she have a rash? are you able to control her fever with medication? most importantly, how is she acting? fevers leave adults dehydrated and feeling pretty yucky, so can you imagine being your daughters size? some things to think about though... you should call your doctor, primarily because it is a temperature over 102 degrees and he would like to know. even if you go in and they tell you it is nothing but a virus and you feel silly (we have all been there!) that is what they are their for. also, try giving motrin AND tylenol. myself, at home i do what we do at work. if the fever is over 102 OR lower but my baby is acting like he feels horrible i will give him both (totally safe). but remember that tylenol is every four hours and motrin is every six hours so i suggest writing a list to keep track.
good luck and i hope she feels better! give me a shout if you have any other questions. merry christmas!

It could be an ear infection which always causes my kids to wake up in the middle of the night. Or, it's just a virus that needs to run its course. It is important to get some fluids in her though....I know it's not easy!!

I would call the pediatrician. I would NOT go to the hospital for 103.2 fever though. My daughter was about 18 months old and she spiked a 105 fever...no that is not a typo, her fever was 105. It was about 3:00 in the morning and I called her pediatrician. They recommended giving either tylenol or motrin and then for the next dose switching to the other one. They also recommended a luke warm bath to help cool her off. She loved the bath and was playing.

I took her to the doctor first thing the next morning (the fever had come down but never broke. She had a severe ear infection in both ears.

So I guess my point is, don't panic but do take her to the doctor so that they can make sure that nothing is wrong or if something is wrong then they can treat it.

Good luck and I hope that she starts feeling better soon.
